He’s quiet for a long time, and when she looks at him, his eyes are studying her curiously. “I appreciate it,” he says finally.

They resume eating in awkward silence. But after he shared that small glimpse of his life before he presented, she wants to know more.

“Where is your family now?” she asks softly, studying his face. His tempting scent sours with the question, and she regrets opening her mouth.

“Does it matter?” he replies, placing his plate on the coffee table and angling his body so he’s facing her. He’s still a respectable distance away, but he could easily close the gap between them in less than a second.

She shrugs. “Just making conversation,” she squeaks out, sounding anything but convincing.

She wants to know more about him, as irrational as it may be.

If they’re stuck together, she might as well.

“I was never allowed to communicate with them, so I have no idea. They were in Maitland City when I presented.”

“Oh.”

She’s going to be sick. How could they not allow the Alphas to speak with their families?

It’s dehumanizing.

Just like she was taught they’re less than human.

It’s as if he reads her mind. “Some Alphas take their own lives because they can’t handle being cut off from their families.”

She shifts uncomfortably. “Why are you telling me all of this?”

He shrugs. “You asked. And like I said, you’re probably the last person I’ll see while I’m alive. I have no problem sharing.”

Her heart clenches as she looks at him. A tuft of hair has fallen into his face, and she has a terrifying urge to shift closer and smooth it away.

Does shewanthim to die?

It would be easier if he did. Then she could forget this night, fix her life, and embrace being an Omega.

“My family left Lincoln City when I presented,” she says, scraping her fork against the plate. “My parents had been planning on moving anyway, and they sold their house when I presented. They moved with my older Beta sister to another part of the country.”

“So, they left you here.”

When he says it like that, with the softest hint of compassion in his voice, it makes her want to cry.

She shrugs. “I wouldn’t say theyleftme; they just didn’t want to be tethered down by who their daughter is.”

“Right. Because you can’t control that you’re an Omega.”

His tone makes her defensive. “Yes.Exactly. That’s just the way it is,” she says, glaring at him. The conversation has turned dangerous. She should leave and barricade herself in the bedroom.

But she stays rooted on her couch to stare daggers at him. Anger bubbles over in her and she continues to talk.

“It is what it is, and you can’tchangeit,” she snarls at him. “So, whatever you think you’re doing is pointless.”

He tilts his head. “Do you always pick fights when you’re feeling vulnerable?” he challenges her, leaning in closer. “Because I alreadyhavemade a difference.”

She counts two freckles on his face, angry that the world would make an Alpha so attractive.

“Oh, really? And how is that?” she spits, venom lacing her tone.

“Because I’m sitting with an Omega and eating dinner on her couch, and I haven’t torn her limb from limb.”
