They’re not ‘love’ bites. They’re just bites.

It’s obvious he was expecting that reaction, and he huffs, annoyed. “Good morning to you, too.”

“I mean it. Get the fuck out of my nest.”

Instead, he lays back on the pillow, looking up at her smugly with those knowing blue eyes.

“Or what?”

She scowls. “I don’t need to give you a reason. It’smynest, and I want you out.”

He stares at her for a long time, holding her gaze with a patient expression. Finally, he sighs and sits up, exposing his muscular scarred chest. “You begged me not to leave you last night,” he says, kicking the covers off to stand up. “And I promised you I wouldn’t.”

It’s difficult to not look him up and down as he stands naked next to the bed, but she accomplishes it. “I don’t remember that,” she snaps, shame flooding her cheeks, “because it would be a hell of a lot better if youdidleave.”

She feels sick with the lie. She remembers everysecondof their time together and the way he tended to her. It was incredible, and it made her forget about the world outside.

It made her feelsafe.

It was the happiest she’s felt since she presented.

But she doesn’t trust the feeling, so she says anything she can to get him away from her.

He scoffs and retrieves his clothes from the other side of the room, turning his back to her. More scars cover the skin of his back, jagged and irregular. “You’re insufferable,” he says, pulling his shirt over his head. He turns back to look at her as he zips up his jeans. “It’s two in the afternoon right now. We’re leaving in three hours.”

“Wait. What?”

He raises an eyebrow, exasperated. “We’re leaving in three hours. You might want to eat something and shower before then.”

“Leaving where?” she demands, and he simply crosses his arms and glares at her. It makes her stomach churn as the sweet Alpha from before disappears.

“To carry out what I came here for.”

Of course.

She has no right to feel upset after she kicked him out of her bed.

But a tiny part of her, the small part that she tries to ignore, can’t help but feel hurt.

Did you really think you were more important than his mission? her inner voice taunts.Did you think that after this, he would change his mind and leave Lincoln City with you?

Yes, that’s exactly what she thought.

She will not cry in front of him. She willnot.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” She tries to keep the waver out of her voice but fails miserably.

He cocks an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”

She hates how patient he is with her. He has no right to be so calm and collected after everything.

He’s supposed to be the monster from all her textbooks, not be the embodiment of every fantasy she’s ever had. And he’s certainly not supposed to wear a smirk that makes her stomach flip.

“Whatever,” she mutters, unable to put up a fight. When he closes her bedroom door, offering her the illusion of privacy, she bites her lip to keep from crying.

He sees through her bullshit, and it hasn’t even been a week.

She allows herself a few tears before swallowing an extra dose of suppressants, hoping her Heat ending so early wasn’t just a fluke.
