She leaves with him quietly, not bothering to put up a fight.

The tension is back between them, just as awkward as it was when he first stole her car.

He won’t look at her, and the horrifying urge to cry makes its way up into her throat again.

You did this. You pushed him away.

Now, they drive down the abandoned city streets, and she panics. Her mind races as she thinks of ways to change his mind.

“Someone could shoot at us,” she says, ducking her head.

“They already would have by now,” he says simply, focusing on the road. “My guys are here, anyway. We should be safe.”

“Yourguys?”

He sighs. “Yes, Hazel.”

“More Alphas?”

“Correct.”

His words are clipped with her, his tone callous and cold, and she wants to scream at him.

Pay attention to me,she wants to say.Pay attention to me like you did earlier.

He won’t even look at her.

“Why are they here?” she demands, staring pointedly at him.

He doesn’t meet her gaze and keeps his attention on the road ahead.

“Stop asking questions you don’t want the answers to,” he snaps.

She keeps her head down until he pulls the car into an empty parking garage. Before she can ask where they are, he opens her door and takes her by the arm, leading her up a flight of stairs to an elevator.

As the doors close, panic sets in.

“What’s going to happen?” she whispers. “What are you going to do?”

Is this a suicide mission? Am I going to die?

The elevator moves much too slow, and her breathing quickens.

He notices, and his sharp expression softens. “What I planned to do before you…distractedme,” he says with a dark chuckle. “I tried to tell you before, but you didn’t listen.”

The elevator finally stops, and when the doors open, she follows him out, struggling for air. Her mouth falls open when she sees where she is.

The corporate office building is empty, but the lights remain on and the doors to the offices are open.

Everyone left in a hurry.

Abel walks down the hallway as if he’s been here before. She follows him automatically, despite her instincts screaming to run away.
