Hazel Nashhas a nice to ring to it, her inner Omega whispers.

“He also uploaded documents with classified information to the internet.”

Oh, no.

“I…I didn’t know that,” she stammers.

The officer obviously sees through her bullshit. “In his broadcast, he said you were with him willingly.”

There’s a question she’s not asking, but her glare is enough to get her message across.

“Not willingly, no,” she squeaks out.

Another officer stands beside her, and Hazel begins to panic. “Approximately how long were you with Abel Nash?” he asks her.

She didn’t expect this at all. She was hoping they would offer sympathy, not treat her like she’s committed a crime.

“I…I don’t know—”

“I’m pretty sure she should have legal representation if you’re to question her like that,” a voice says behind her.

Her heartbeat quickens, and she turns to see Ava, who has an eyebrow raised as she glares at the officer.

Hazel almost cries with relief.

Ava is safe!

The female officer shrugs, unimpressed. “We need her statement.”

“And she’s given it to you to the best of her abilities,” Ava says calmly. “But right now, she needs medical attention, and I’m her emergency contact, Ava Sandoval.”

Hazel knows better than to argue with Ava, and apparently, so does the officer. “Do you have a guardian for her? She’s not to leave Maitland City unsupervised, just likeyou.” The officer narrows her eyes at Ava, who simply cocks a brow back at her.

“Yes, we’re accompanied by my mother and staying at her residence.” Ava rattles off the address and the officer enters it into her computer.

“I guess you’re free to go for now, Miss Wolfe,” she says, doing her best to hide a scowl. “Sorry for the inconvenience. We’ll contact you at your temporary address if we need you again.”

Hazel stumbles out of the chair and towards Ava, who wraps her arms around her. Hazel lets out a sound between a sob and a laugh as she clutches her friend tightly.

“Ava, I’m sorry…”

“Don’t talk yet,” Ava mutters in her ear as she leads her back out of the gymnasium. They pass by police officers and Beta military members, who look at them suspiciously. She feels them search her face, as if they can tell there’s something she’s hiding.

They all know what you’ve done. They know you’ve been with an Alpha.

It makes her shiver.

Ava’s motheris quite possibly the kindest person Hazel has ever met. Occasionally, Ava’s mother visited them in Lincoln City, but it’s Hazel’s first time seeing Patricia Sandoval’s residence.

“I’m so glad you’re okay, honey,” she whispers into Hazel’s ear as she pulls her in for a deep hug.

Hazel steps into her temporary house. It’s the first time she’s genuinely smiled in ages.

It’s a small stone cottage with a warm fireplace and welcoming, cozy décor. She never wants to leave; she simply wants to hide from her problems in the spare bedroom forever.

She’s fairly certain she’s in alotof trouble with everyone, her best friend included.
