When they drive out of the city, her eyes take their fill of their surroundings. Freeways she hasn’t been on in years, housing subdivisions, and sky-high corporate offices fill her vision.

A giant shopping mall with luxury boutiques pass by her her, and she’s never been so jealous of Betas.

They have all this. They can come and go as they want freely. But she’s been confined to the city just because of her pheromones and mating gland.

She wishes she could shop with Ava and take road trips just for fun. Most of all, she wishes she could be with her family again, and that her mom wouldn’t frown with disappointment when she sees her daughter.

It fuckingaches.

What if she and Abel had been Betas?

It would be so much easier. They could have bonded over their witty banter and done normal couple activities.

Don’t think about him.

Ava would have liked him. Abel would have liked her.

Don’t cry.

Now, she’s left him to die, all because the world is so fuckingunfair.

All because he wanted normalcy, just like her.

She puts her head down and does her best to quiet her sobs.

Maitland City is gorgeous, complete with lush forests and quaint cottages, so much different from Lincoln City.

The reunification center is at an elementary school, and it makes her heart ache as she’s reminded of Connor.

“What if one of your students grows up to present as an Alpha, Hazel? Then what?”

Abel was more on the mark than he realized.

As they arrive at the front gate, they’re met with police officers in uniform.

She’s led out of the SUV and into the school’s gymnasium, where they provide her with emergency suppressants and toiletries. She’s the only Omega in the building, and every officer eyes her with suspicion.

It makes her extremely uncomfortable.

Then come the questions, aimed pointedly at her.

“What were you still doing in Lincoln City?”

She should have expected the questions, or at least prepared some type of answer.

“My car was stolen by an Alpha.”

The female officer narrows her eyes at her from across the table. “Where was your car?”

Uh oh.

“At my apartment.” She’s not the greatest liar, but she hopes her face is at least a bit believable.

The officer turns her attention to her laptop. “Abel Nash. This was the one that broadcast that message, correct? It went across the nation, and now worldwide. It’s goneviral.”

Oh, shit. Abel’s plan worked. And now she knows his last name is Nash.
