Hazel frowns. She blocked out most of his speech.
“You liked him,” Ava adds, searching Hazel’s expression.
The tears start again, and she shakes her head bitterly.
“What does that say about me?” she asks shamefully. “I knew him for…what, three days? And it was the closest I felt toanyman. I…Ilikedhim. He made me laugh. He was clever. And he waspatientwith me. I don’t know how to explain it.”
Ava remains silent.
“And I miss him. I fuckingmisshim, even though he’s the cause of all this. There’s this ache in my chest, and it’s been less than half a day since I’ve seen him. I can stillsmellhim…”
She doesn’t know how to explain it to Ava. There’s a bitterness inside her, an aching loneliness that she knows could only come from being away from Abel.
Yet it makes no sense. Just because she spent her Heat with him doesn’t mean that they’re mates.
Right?
“I mean, to be fair, he did threaten us,” Ava says. “But on the other hand, he’s trying to shed light on what’s been happening on that island and throughout the country.”
“Wait,” Hazel sniffles, her eyebrows shooting up. “Do you think he’sright?”
Ava sighs and looks thoughtful. “I would say I understand what he’s trying to do, but I don’t agree with his methods.”
Leave it to Ava to come to a rational conclusion.
“Wow.”
“Also, he obviously gave you a good fucking.” Ava smirks. “And who knows how long you’ve needed that?”
Hazel snorts.
“Come on,” Ava insists. “Get cleaned up, eat, and then we’ll discuss where we go from here.”
It hurts to think of Abel and everything that’s happened, but Hazel forces herself to be strong.
She’s come this far in life and no matter how much she wants to give up and fall into a pit of despair, she won’t do it.
Abel made her feelaliveafter so long.
Despite their circumstances, she washappy.
It’s enough to hold on to for now.
CHAPTER 30
HAZEL
The makeshift rulesare simple and broadcast clearly on the television.
Omegas must be accompanied at all times by a Beta.
Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
Do not engage with Alphas.
Which means that Hazel and Ava aren’t leaving the house anytime soon.
As Hazel dries off from her shower and slips into borrowed clean clothes for the night, she grows anxious.
