She’s a part of this mess. She wouldn’t be surprised if police show up to arrest her.

Ava sleeps in the guest room with her, but Hazel wakes up at every little sound, her heart racing. In the middle of the night, she swears she can scent Abel, but the phantom fragrance disappears almost immediately.

Her mating gland throbs and she itches at it constantly like a nervous tic.

Alpha Alpha Alpha!

Her friend is a deep sleeper and isn’t disturbed when Hazel slips out of bed and into the living room to turn on the television.

Maitland City has many more channels than Lincoln City.

There are no Omegas here, normally. They don’t have to hideas muchfrom Beta citizens, but they still spin an anti-Alpha narrative.

But Abel’s masked face shows up on the screen, and her heart skips a beat.

“Authorities are still looking for the masked Alpha who hacked Lincoln City’s broadcast network and is responsible for the sudden evacuation of the area.”

He’s alive. They didn’t find him.

She stifles a sob with her fist, doing her best to not break down as she watches the screen.

She’s still furious at him for everything he’s done, and with good reason.

But she alsowants him.She wants to touch him again, wants him to nibble at her mating gland and prepare a fresh nest for her as he…

“Hey.”

She startles when she sees Ava standing near the entry to the front room.

“Hey,” Hazel replies weakly, guilt staining her cheeks as Ava glances at the screen. Her friend’s expression is unreadable, but shame still sours her stomach as she bites her lip nervously.

“You went into Heat with him.” It’s not a question, and she’s certain Ava knew the minute she saw her again.

Which means…

Which means the police probably knew.

Oh, God.

“They think I’m an accomplice, don’t they?” Hazel whispers, curling up into a ball on the couch. “They think I have something to do with this.”

“It’s possible. But Mom will get you a lawyer. You’re a protected class, and theyneedyou. They need us and our pheromones.”

“Oh,God,” Hazel mutters. “What’s stopping the police from showing up here in the morning and taking me away? You saw how they were to me. That officer didn’t want to let me go.”

A breaking news headline flashes over the screen and cuts away from the looping video of Abel to an excited new anchor.

“We’ve just received a new video of the Alpha believed to be responsible for the evacuation of Lincoln City—going by the nameAbel.”

Hazel’s mouth turns dry.

The video is gritty, but it’s him. With the mask and hood still on his face, the only part of him visible are his piercing eyes, one swollen and the other blackened.

This time, she hangs onto every word. She doesn’t block him out.

“You may still think of us as monsters,” he says calmly. “And some will say we’re hoping for the destruction of Betas. That we believe we’re entitled to Omegas as property. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

She missed his voice. Low, persuasive, but laced with calm.
