“He was going to arrest you, Hazel,” he explains.

“Sowhat?! You don’t just get to kill anyone you want! Oh my god, you’re a murderer…”

As much as he would love to explain everything to her at the moment, they don’t have time. “We need to go,now,” he snaps, attempting to pull her away from the road. Her scent is just as lovely as before, but it’s warmer now that it’s laced with her rage.

“I’m not going anywhere with you!” she yells, and he fights the urge to clamp his hand over her mouth. She attempts to pull away from him, yanking her arm. “I’m not about to be an accomplice to all this. What have youdone—”

“Hazel. I need your help.”

She looks at him incredulously. “With what?” she snarls. “Hiding the body, youfreak?”

He rolls his eyes and huffs. “No, you can wait in the car while I do that.”

She gapes at him. “I’m not goinganywherewith you. I hope they arrest you and throw your ass in jail forever, you crazy delusional terrorist—”

“I need your help to save Connor.”

That stops her.

“What did you say?” She looks like she’s seen a ghost, and he wants nothing more than to wipe that expression away.

“Connor. Your student. I know where he is, Hazel.”

She shakes her head as disbelief crosses her features. “You…you said he was dead,” she whispers. “I just saw the broadcast. You said—”

“I’ll explain it all in the car.” He leads her down the road, away from the cottage and towards an inconspicuous grey car. “Just get in, and we’ll talk.”

He had hoped his words would be enough to deter her from running away from him. But she hesitates, and he pulls one last card.

“I’m your safest option. I can protect you.”

She sneers. “You killed a cop. I highly doubt you’re my best option.”

“If you stick around here, they’ll believe you did it,” he explains.

“So, you’reblackmailingme into going with you?” she asks incredulously.

He hesitates. “It was never my plan,” he says slowly. “But if I didn’t intervene, things would have been a lot worse for you. They have…methodsof retrieving information that I don’t ever want you to experience,” he says quietly.

It’s true. He’s been on the receiving end of it, specifically during pain tolerance training.

It’s what broke Reid.

He knows Hazel would have told them anything they wanted to hear at the end of it, even if it wasn’t true.

His biggest mistake was pulling her into all of this. At the time, it had seemed like he had no other choice, but now he wishes he had never put her through any of it.

Whether she likes it or not, he’s the best option to keep her safe.

“Just get in the damn car, Hazel. For once, justlisten to me.”

She bites her lip and acquiesces.
