It was terrifying.

But the traitorous part of her, her inner Omega, quietly rejoices.

Alpha protects us!

He would do anything to keep her safe, and that makes her feel…

Elated.

Disgusted.

Confused.

She tries not to think about what he’s doing with the body or ruminate on how easy it was for him to take a life.

We’re going to save Connor. Focus on that.

He closes the door and starts the car, and she wonders when she decided to stop fighting him.

Probably when his scent infiltrated her senses and her heartbeat raced.

Being near him feels right, no matter how much she may not want it to.

“I’m sorry,” he says after a minute. “That shouldn’t have happened.”

His apology is genuine, and she wonders exactly what he’s sorry for.

She has a feeling it’s for more than the murder she just witnessed.

“No,” she says quietly. “It shouldn’t have.” She watches him and studies his expression as he keeps his gaze on the road. He’s not wearing his mask anymore. His hair is mussed, more so than usual, and his lip is split and swollen. With his dark stubble, he looks unhinged.

“You look like shit,” she adds, and he grins.

“I missed you, too.”

“They’re going to find us,” she says. “I’m sure there are roadblocks everywhere.”

She’s terrified that this will end in some horrible shootout, and she’ll be caught in the middle of it.

He sighs. “I won’t let that happen,” he mutters. They turn down empty winding roads, and it reminds her of the barren areas she drove through to visit the island in the first place.

“How? You’re the most wanted man in the country right now,” she argues, her voice wavering. The adrenaline starts to wear off, and for the first time since he reappeared, she realizes how truly fucked she is.

“I have people on my side, Hazel. Important people that believe in our cause.”

“Yourcause,” she snaps. “Something that you dragged me into!”

“You know why other countries won’t let our people in? They don’t agree with how Alphas are treated. They’re not the lawless lands we were taught about in school. They don’t wantusthere. We’rethe bad guys.” His tone is still calm, but he grips the steering wheel a little too tightly.

She fidgets in her seat, wringing her hands.

“This has to stop, Hazel. Ithasto. When that little boy showed up at the island…yourstudent, I knew it needed to end.”

Her heart aches. “Did you know?” she demands. “Did you know I was his teacher?”

“Not until after,” he admits. “Draven had access to files.”

“Who the hell isDraven?”
