How could they do this to a child? How could they—

“Open the door!” she screeches at Abel, who appears at her side. “Please help him…Abelplease…”

The longer she hears the cries, the more hysterical she grows. She watches helplessly as Abel fumbles with the lock, sobs building in her chest.

She can’t lose it in front of Connor, though. She has to get it together.

The window that looks into the office is pitch-black, and she wonders if Connor can see her, at least.

“Connor?” she calls, forcing back the sobs. “It’s Miss Hazel. We’re going to get you out, okay? Listen to my voice, sweetheart. We’re coming.”

Her voice breaks on the last word.

They left a child all alone in this place, locked inside.

Abel is murmuring something to her, his voice low and soothing, but she doesn’t hear it.

It feels like ages until the door finally bursts open, and a stream of light from the hallway filters in.

She pushes past Abel and falls to her knees as Connor comes into view.

He’s dressed in tiny light blue hospital scrubs and, despite the wary expression on his face, he looks healthy enough.

“Miss Hazel?” he asks, his voice small and meek. “Are you coming to rescue me?”

A sob escapes her, and she pulls Connor into her arms.

“Oh, honey,” she whispers, holding him close. She rocks him back and forth, silent tears rolling down her cheeks.

He’s here. He’s alive.

“Hey, Connor.” A voice murmurs next to her. Abel has crouched down to their level, and Connor perks his head up. “I’m Abel, Miss Hazel’s friend. We’re going to take you home now, okay?”

Abel’s voice is gentle, and his expression is soft as he regards Connor, who hops out of Hazel’s embrace.

“You’re an Alpha,” Connor announces, taking a step toward Abel. “But you’re not scary.”

Abelgrinsand it makes his eyes crinkle at the corners. It’s an image she’ll burn into her memory, because he’s never looked happier. “Not all of us are scary, Connor. I’m glad you think I’m not.”

But then Connor’s attention turns to Hazel. “They thought I was an Alpha, Miss Hazel. But they were nice to me, and I was brave. I’mverybrave.”

It’s good to know his confidence is still there, even though Hazel vows to murder anyone that was involved with this with her bare hands.

Consequences be damned.

Thankfully, Abel remains grounded while she spirals. “Hey. Let’s be brave together and get out of here. You don’t happen to know the way out, do you?” he teases Connor lightly.

It works. Connor nods enthusiastically, and he gives Abel a toothy grin. “Yeah! I know the way out!”

She’s never appreciated Abel more.

The Alpha keeps Connor’s energy up, distracting him playfully as they leave the cursed building, Hazel’s hand in Connor’s.

They did it.

They rescued him.

“Do I get to see my mom and dad soon?” Connor asks Abel. “The doctors said they would visit me, but they haven’t yet.”
