“It was exciting, at first. Until I realized what my life would be for the foreseeable future,” he adds. “And once they mentioned a child was on the island with us…I couldn’t do it anymore.”

“I know,” she whispers. They pass by empty offices and peek inside each window, just to check.

Connor is here somewhere, according to Draven.

His intel may not be perfect, but it’s all they have.

And if they can’t find Connor…

Well, Abel doesn’t want to think about that.

“Let’s try the second floor,” Hazel whispers, squinting as she reads the signs. “The laboratory is up there. Hopefully…” her voice trails off.

Hopefully, he’s alive and unharmed.

Abel reaches out to take her hand, and she lets him. He intertwines their fingers together, and his inner Alpha roars.

Keep her.

He ignores the thought and leads them up the stairs. Her scent fills his senses, her natural sweetness soured by anxiety and anguish.

It mimics his own emotions.

He holds his breath as they head down another dimly lit hallway, the dim fluorescent bulbs casting a grey hue over the walls and floor.

There are only two floors in this building. If Connor’s not up here somewhere…

His thoughts are interrupted by a faint cry, followed by Hazel’s gasp. She releases his hand and sprints down the hallway.

“He’s in here!”

CHAPTER 34

HAZEL

Abel’s leaving.

It’s the end of their story.

And it’s fine, it truly is, because his planwillwork.

If she returns with Connor and blames everything on Abel, she’ll be in the clear.

So why is she so sad?

Her heart is beating entirely too loud in the dark corridors as anxiety pulses through her.

She wonders if Abel notices.

But then she hears a muffled cry, and her body goes into autopilot.

She drops Abel’s hand and sprints down the hall and practically throws herself against the locked door.

“Connor?!” she yells, pushing her shoulder against the entrance to the lab. “Connor?!”

Another cry, and she’s sure it’s him.

She kicks uselessly, the door barely budging as her foot screams in pain. But she needs to open it. She has to save him.
