But as she maneuvers her phone around, shining the light on the cabinets above her head, she swears another scent drifts through her senses.

Something almost warm and earthy, and entirely out of place in the building.

The air is heavier as she explores the rest of the room, her phone’s flashlight the only source of light. Her notes should be in the cabinet against the furthest wall from her, opposite from the door.

She shines the light towards the opposite wall…

And drops her phone, shrouding her in darkness.

CHAPTER 3

AUDREY

There’ssomeone in the room with her.

She lets out a shriek and her phone crashes to the floor, bouncing and landing on the camera light. She fumbles for it, gasping as she aims the light back on the cabinets.

There’s no one there.

Maybe she’s seeing things.

The labisfreaky at night, especially with all the lights off and the added adrenaline from sneaking around.

Her heart pounds from psyching herself out, and she hurries to the cabinets, rummaging through them until she finds what she needs. She focuses her phone’s light on the folders, searching through sections and scanning contents until she finds the ones with her name on them.

It’s not like they don’t have electronic copies of her work, but she stillwantsthem.

She hurries to place them all into a pile on the counter next to the file cabinet and—

“You’re Audrey,” a low voice says.

This time, she doesn’t drop her phone, but she jumps back so hard the cabinets rattle. She shines a light towards the voice and freezes.

There’s an Alpha in the room with her.

She blinks in disbelief, the phone wavering in her hand as she looks on in terror. The man stands near the door, leaning back against the wall, his gaze trained on her. Dressed in all black, he looks like nothing more than a shadow with a face.

He was in here the whole time.

He must have watched her while she crept around the lab like an idiot fumbling for her notes, which now seem incredibly insignificant.

Especially since she’s about to die.

He’s blocking the door. There’s no way out, and her only source of light is her cell phone, which has no service.

She keeps the light trained on him, and he simply watches her, unblinking.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispers shakily. It’s the only thing she can think to say.

He simply regards her, tilting his head subtly. “I could say the same for you.”

His low voice barely has any inflection, and it makes it all so much worse.

She has no retort to that because he’s right.

They’re a considerable distance apart from each other, but it’s not enough. He starts to take a step closer to her, but she hurries to the opposite corner of the room, keeping her cell phone light pointed directly at him.

There’s nothing in his eyes. No fear, no anger, just…amusement, at most.
