Like this is just a game to him.

But what did the documents say?A little voice inside her whispers.

Alphas are powerful, yet not brutal by nature.

They simply desire their mate.

The Alpha in front of her can have as many mates as he pleases, as long as he lets her leave.

Hell, she’ll put everything in the shredder if she makes it out of this alive.

“How do you know my name?” she asks softly. Her hand shakes as she steadies the light on him, but he remains still, unaffected by the fear in her voice.

“They kept your resignation letter on file. Imagine my surprise when I found out one of you had morals.”

Nausea churns in her gut.

She tries to plead her case. He doesn’t know her, and it’s quite possible she’s never making it out of this room alive.

Maybe, just maybe, an explanation can save her.

“I didn’t know,” she whispers. “I didn’t know how bad it was for you or the others. I swear—”

“But once achildwas involved, you decided it suddenly wasn’t right.”

He sounds tired, as if this is the hundredth time he’s heard this explanation.

But the worst part is, he’s not wrong.

So, she nods quietly, tears filling her eyes. “Yes. Then I decided it wasn’t right,” she whispers.

Her vision blurs with her shame, but she continues.

She might as well give a twisted confession that only he will be privy to.

Her sister would say it’s tragically romantic.

“We learned all about this in school, and I’m sure you did too, before you…presented,” Audrey stammers. “I thought it was the right thing to keep Alphas in the military and Omegas in the cities. We were told it was the best for both of you. I don’t know how much you’ve seen of the notes in here, but my research involved Omega scenting. And I’m taking it back from my boss because I hate her and she lied to me.”

It's not her best explanation, but it’s better than nothing.

He doesn’t reply, but his expression changes.

It’s not softer. The harsh shadows on his cheekbones don’t allow for that.

But it’s more curious.

She wants to say more, now that she’s finally speaking her truth, and he must notice.

“You can continue.”

His voice is deep with a slight rasp, and it sends chills up her spine.

“After I saw everything—after I watched the news, and listened to the Omegas’ testimonies—I read all the papers that were leaked…I spent all week on my couch, just reading them, learning more—”

“You read the documents? The ones that were uploaded anonymously and sent to the major news sites?” His curiosity finally shows through in his tone, and she nods shakily.

“I did. And…I’m sorry, I didn’t know—”
