“Stop apologizing. Apologies don’t bring people back from the dead.”

She squeezes her eyes shut, unable to meet his expression any longer. Tears fall down her cheeks, and she realizes she’s not above begging for life.

“Please don’t kill me,” she whispers, shaking her head. “I don’t want to die here.”

Silence. She chokes on her sobs, desperate to not sound pathetic. If he intends to kill her, she should go down with some dignity, right?

How embarrassing would it be, though, to be found dead on the floor of this lab?

She opens her eyes and hastily wipes away her tears. The lump in her throat is so large that it’s almost impossible to speak without sobbing. “Please,” she says.

The scent swirls around her again, and she realizes it’s coming fromhim.

It’s not unpleasant. Any other time, she would wonder what cologne a Beta is wearing, but this aroma is too pure to be artificial.

If she gets out of here alive, she’s sure she’ll commit it to memory.

There’s a sharp sound, and she shines her light downwards to see his hand fiddling with a knife. He spins the simple silver blade in his hand but makes no move toward her.

“You know,” he says conversationally, as she keeps her gaze frozen on his weapon, “I’ve heard that a lot. But I think this may be the first time I actually listen when someone begs for their life.”

The room is quiet except for the spinning of the blade, and the adrenaline makes her chest burn.

“What?” she asks shakily, as he slowly walks away from her, his boots echoing against the tile floor. She keeps the light of her phone on him the entire time.

He stands next to the door and opens it wide.

“You can leave, Audrey.”

He doesn’t move. He keeps the same relaxed position as he had when she first saw him, leaning back against the wall with his arms crossed.

To get through that door, she’ll have to be inches from him.

“Get away from the door,” she tries shakily.

The bastard actuallychuckles. “I’m not that generous. You’re pushing your luck.”

She freezes, her eyes wide as she looks from the door back to him.

“Or you could stay with me here all night. We could have some more heart-to-hearts.”

She can’t move. Going to the exit means getting closer to him, and shecan’tdo it.

“If you knew me at all,” he continues, “you would be amazed at how much patience I’m gifting you right now. Justamazed.”

Mind over matter, Audrey. Just move towards the door.

His subtle scent swirls around her, invading her senses. If he smells like this to a Beta, she can’t even imagine how he smells to an Omega.

He chuckles again, and with a subtle movement closes the switchblade, obscuring it from her view.

“See? Nothing to be afraid of, now,” he says. “Catch.”

He tosses it to her, and she’s amazed that she catches it one handed.

She clutches the closed handle like a lifeline.

But she wouldn’t be surprised if he had twenty more weapons hidden under his bulky dark jacket.
