She doesn’t even have what she went there for, so she endangered herself for absolutelynothing.

She debates calling Mindy and telling her everything, but she stops herself.

It would probably only make things worse.

Pearl watches her intensely from the bedroom nightstand, slow blinking at Audrey as she changes into sweatpants and a loose top.

“Mrow.”

“Yes, I know I fucked up,” Audrey sighs. “But it’ll be fine. It has to be fine. I’m a Beta, anyway. He has better things to do than bother with me.”

If she says it enough, maybe it will be true.

She wakesup the next morning and feelsawful.

The sun peeks through her bedroom curtains, and it makes her eyes hurt.

“Great,” she grumbles, pressing her hand to her clammy, overheated forehead.

Now is not the time to be sick.

She checks her phone as Pearl meows, pawing at her impatiently.

She slept for fourteenhours.

“I suppose you’re hungry,” she sighs to the cat, who responds by butting her furry head against Audrey’s chin.

Audrey drags herself out of bed, which takes more effort than usual. She groans at the movement, her limbs aching with fatigue.

Her immune system must be down due to all the recent stress, or maybe Mindy caught something and brought it over the other day.

Regardless, she doesnothave the mental capacity for this.

Pearl leads her out the bedroom door and into the kitchen, but not as aggressively as Audrey expected. The cat’s breakfast is hours late, but the feline isn’t playing up the dramatics like she normally would.

“What the hell?” she mutters as she looks down at the cat’s food bowl.

It’s full, with a few of Pearl’s special tuna treats placed on top of the kibble like sprinkles on a cake. The water is topped off as well.

Was Audrey that out of it she forgot she fed the cat?

It’s bizarre, and the only explanation is that Audrey fed her and forgot, or Mindy used her key last night.

She fires off a text to her sister as she turns on the television.

Hey, did you come over last night? Did you feed Pearl?

Even sitting down on the couch seems to take hours instead of minutes. She breathes heavily as she leans back against the cushions, focusing on the screen.

She still can’t believe she slept so long—the last time she did was when she had a violent flu years ago.

Mindy replies almost immediately.

No?? Was I supposed to?

Audrey stares at the phone screen, confusion swirling in her cloudy brain.
