The Alpha is sitting on her couch.

Audrey doesn’t even yell. She just stares at him in shock as a pair of disturbingly bright blue eyes regard her. His hair is a dirty-blonde and wavy, falling just past his ears. He has a handsome face, with a defined jaw and high cheekbones, but it’s his neck that catches her attention. Two large, thick scars run across his throat, as if someone tried to kill him twice.

He looks like he escaped from a war zone.

It takes Audrey a mere moment to process his appearance, and finally, she finds her words.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

She presses herself against the wall and keeps her eyes trained on him and the way he sits on her couch, long arms slung across the top of it without a care in the world. His black boots rest on her coffee table, and it’s obvious he’s made himself very comfortable.

Then hegrins, showing off straight teeth with a predatory smile.

“That’s what you said to me the first time we met. I had hoped you were more original than that.” He sighs dramatically and shakes his head, smirking and amused. “My fault for hoping, I guess.”

She stares at him in disbelief, her back aching from how hard she’s pressing herself up against it. “Hoping for what?”

“That you would be more fun. Oh, or at least, appreciative. I brought you your notes back.” He turns to angle himself towards her fully, and she can’t help but notice the chiseled muscles under his tight black shirt. She’s not sure if he has an ounce of fat on him. Even with clothes on, she can tell his body is crafted from years of discipline and training.

He could destroy her in seconds.

“You broke into my house,” she whispers, her migraine returning. She squints, making a face as she struggles to keep her eyes open.

“I wouldn’t say Ibrokein,” he clarifies as she trembles in fear and pain. “I’ve broken into my fair share of places, and believe me, babe, this was way easier than it should have been.”

She doesn’t have a response to that. She just stares at him, slack jawed.

He moves his boots off the coffee table, leans his elbows on the armrest, and looks up at her, his blue eyes dancing with delight. “You don’t even have a security system. Why wouldn’t you have a security system if you live alone? Again, not too smart, Audrey.”

She spots her phone on the other cushion next to him.

“Not only that, but you left your phone out here,” he continues, as he follows her gaze. “It’s like you wanted to tempt fate.”

He winks at her, and she wants to cry.

He’s going to kill her, probably take his time, and enjoy every minute of it.

What a horrible way to go.

“You should have just stayed home the other night, babe,” he whispers. “I’m grateful you didn’t, butwow. What a world of shit you’re in now, huh?”

This can’t be real. This can’t be her life right now.

Despite how miserable she’s been in the past weeks, shewantsto live. There’s so much more for her to do, to learn, to explore…

“If you’re going to kill me, why would you even bother with my binder?” she murmurs. “Or the knife?”

She’s proud of herself for keeping the tremble out of her voice, but her hands give her away as they shake.

Only then does the smirk leave his face. He tilts his head curiously at her, and on anyone else, the gesture would be endearing. “Why would I kill you?” he asks, sounding genuinely confused. “That knife was for protection.”

He’s not making sense, and her foggy brain won’t allow her to process anything. “Protection?” she repeats.

He looks at her as if she’s stupid and finally makes a move to sit up. She shrieks, but he holds his hands up in surrender. “I won’t come closer,” he promises her, and takes a step back from the couch and towards the opposite wall.

“LEAVE!” She finally finds her voice, but it comes out as a sob at the end. But if she screams loud enough, her neighbors will hear…

“Edwin and Darla are out for the week,” he says calmly, as if knowing the names of her neighbors isn’t a big deal. “Yelling won’t help. You have a lovely timbre to your voice, though. And I do love a good scream.”
