If Audrey ever doubted he was military before, it’s gone as she watches the chaos unfold before her.

Julian’s movements are fluid and quick, and the Beta man Audrey kicked is defenseless against Julian’s quick as lightning movements.

But the Alpha doesn’t stop. There’s the flash of a blade and suddenly a knife is in the Beta man’s chest. He lets out a gurgle and Audrey gasps, watching as the man’s life fades away.

Still, Julian continues. He roars, and the blade sinks into every inch of the man’s skin. Julian sticks him over and over, aiming for his face, his chest, and his eyes.

Even when the man’s face is nothing but torn red flesh, Julian holds him up by the neck and continues stabbing.

The room smells like blood, sweat and bile when Julian finally drops the body. He turns to Audrey, panting. His lip is split, and blood is splatted against his face, but he releases the knife when he sees her expression. The weapon clatters to the floor, and she stares at it in shock.

The wind whips in from outside, and the ocean salt mixes with the scent of Julian’s fury.

His eyes are crazed as he looks at her, and she’s never been more frightened of him.

“Stay away from me,” she whispers.

“Baby, it’s all in good fun. You’re just in shock,” he grins as blood drips from his mouth. “See? This is what I was trained to do. I’ll always keep you safe.”

There’s not enough air in the room.

The wind howls from the open door, and her chest hurts as she struggles to breathe.

Her gaze falls back to the men on the floor, both unmoving and bloody.

Julian killed them.

“Baby—” Julian starts, but a flash of black fur appears from the kitchen and races out the open front door.

“NO!” she shrieks, following the cat in a panic. Her bare feet slap against the stones as she makes her way towards the beach. She runs as fast as she’s able to, but Pearl turns into a black speck, then disappears from view into the trees.

She doesn’t know where Julian is, or if he’s even following.

But all she can think about is Pearl, as she stumbles on a fallen branch.

Her feet are cut up and her back burns from being shoved up against the wall, but she keeps running, calling after her cat.

Please don’t leave me Pearl…

But her search comes to an end as she stumbles almost headfirst into a police officer, who holds her up while she cries.

It isn’t until the ambulance arrives she realizes she’s lost her freedom.

Mindy isnothing if not resourceful.

Audrey lies in her hospital bed weeping quietly until her sister shows up, yelling and naming off every law the hospital is violating by keeping Audrey there.

No, she’s not going to an Omega city, since was never assigned one. And yes, she’s Audrey’s legal emergency guardian.

It takes some yelling, pleading, and eventually a phone call with a lawyer, but Audrey is released into Mindy’s care with a monitor wrapped around her ankle.

Mindy stays mostly quiet as she drives her back to the house, but Audrey can feel the questions her sister longs to ask.

Her body still aches even though they pumped her full of suppressants through an I.V. drip. Her Heat is officially over, but the evidence of Julian is all over her body.

But that’s not what upsets her the most.
