Julian’s wicked smile is back, and he takes another step closer to her. “Of course, I know everything about you. You think I wouldn’t know you have a sister?”
Rage bubbles in her, but she does her best to keep calm. “Don’t mention my family.Ever.My life is not your business.”
Julian sighs and shakes his head. “Baby. Are we really back to this? Your life ismy lifenow. Of course, it’s my business.”
Dread creeps up her spine.
She slept with this madman in front of her, and she’s made everything worse.
“What have I done?” she whispers to herself. Julian’s familiar scent invades her senses, and her chest aches as he pulls her into his arms.
She doesn’t resist, but she doesn’t return the embrace. She stays frozen, shock keeping her immobile.
He places a kiss on the top of her head. “You’ve always had to be the strong one,” he murmurs. “I know you’ve been lonely. Just as lonely as I’ve been all these years.”
She’s stunned at how accurate he is.
“But Audrey, Iseeyou. And I cherish you.”
Tears silently roll down her cheeks at the awful realization that Julian knows her more intimately than anyone else.
“Come with me,” he says again. “We’ll go, now. When this is all over, and we don’t have to hide anymore, I’ll give you the fucking world.”
Her choices are limited. She sniffles in his hold, wishing more than anything that she hadn’t broken into her old place of work.
Then, she wouldn’t have met him. He wouldn’t have invaded her life and infected her mind with his words, touch, and scent.
She’s torn in two. Part of her wants to go with him, despite how irrational it may seem.
The other part…
“You said you trust me,” he continues. “Do you still mean it?”
No, she wants to scream.I don’t, you unpredictable psycho.
But she takes a breath and speaks the truth.
She looks up at him, her eyes blurry with tears. “I trust that you’ll keep me safe from everyone but you.”
He grins. “Smart girl.” He taps her on the nose with his finger. “You never cease to amaze me.” His finger then traces an errant tear down her cheek. “Be sure to take your suppressants, baby, then we can go.”
He leans down to kiss her, but then all hell breaks loose.
CHAPTER 20
AUDREY
At first,she thinks she hears a gunshot, but it’s the sound of the front door being kicked open. Two masked men enter, and Audrey is yanked away from Julian and pushed against the wall by the shorter Beta man.
“HE’S ANALPHA!” the other man yells and throws a punch Julian’s way. His fist connects with Julian’s cheek, but Julian barely moves.
Everything seems to happen in slow motion after that.
Julian’s eyes turn dark and he attacks.
He’s on the masked Beta man immediately, knocking him to the floor and climbing on top of him. His partner tries to pull Audrey out of the way and out the door, but she screams and kicks him in the groin. He responds with a grunt and doubles over as Audrey moves out of the way.
She has no clue what’s going on, only that Julian’s fist is connecting with the other man’s face over and over. He snarls when the man finally stops fighting before standing up and turning to the other Beta.
