“And howdoyou feel?” he asks her quietly.

Her pupils dilate as she lets out a slow breath. “Like I’m supposed to be with you,” she admits quietly. “Like as long as we’re together, everything will be alright.”

His heart shatters. He closes the distance between them and kisses her gently. She responds in kind, sighing against his mouth.

Words threaten to spill from his lips, but he knows she’s not ready to hear them yet. He holds them back and vows to whisper them in her ear once she’s asleep.

“Come with me,” he says instead, smiling against her mouth. “Let’s get you out of here.”

But Audrey freezes. “Where?”

He can’t stop his grin. “To Canada. You’ll be safe there with me.”

“I don’t even know how—”

“You have dual citizenship,” he says smugly.

She pauses.

“What are you talking about?” she asks finally. “What do you mean, dual citizenship?”

His face hurts from smiling. Her confused look is adorable, and as much as he’d like to draw it out, he needs to tell her the truth. “I called in a few favors. You should have no problem returning to your home country—you even have property there.”

She stared at him, stunned.

“And since I’m your husband, I have dual citizenship, too.”

CHAPTER 27

AUDREY

She doesn’t havethe emotional energy to process what Julian is saying.

“You’re mywhat?” she demands, pushing at his chest. “What are you talking about?”

He stumbles back slightly, grinning with his dimples on full display. “We’re going backhome,” he enunciates, his eyes wide with delight. “Back to our house. With Pearl, of course.”

She stares at him, dumbfounded.

“Come on, baby. I’m offering you the deal of a lifetime,” he continues as she balks at him. “A doting husband, a perfect house with a white picket fence, and a cat. Maybe another, if you want.”

“I’m not marrying you,” she states.

He scoffs. “Well, not yet. But on paper, you did. Mindy signed the marriage certificate and everything.”

Her head is spinning. “Julian, I can’t handle these mind games—”

“Abel forged documents for us. You and I can safely get across the border. Together.”

“Abel?” she repeats.

Where have I heard that name before?

Julian’s smile falls. “Yes, perfect Abel, the hero that liberated everyone,” he groans. “He owed me a favor. I cashed in.”

Something about his tone makes her pause. “You don’t like him?”

He scoffs. “I don’t like anyone, baby. Besides you and Pearl.”
