There’s something insecure about the way he says it, and she tilts her head knowingly at him. “You’re cuter than him,” she offers.

He blushes the same way he did when she called him perfect, and her heart absolutely melts. “We have to pack. My wife can tell me how ‘cute’ she thinks I am on the way to the border.”

He sounds slightly bitter. Does he not see how handsome he is? Even with his scars, she finds him ridiculously attractive.

But that’s something to dwell on later.

“We can’t leave just yet,” she insists, tugging at his hand. “We have to get this damn thing off me.” She wiggles her foot, and the ankle monitor beeps.

He intertwines their fingers and looks down at the tracker. “It’s an easy fix. It won’t take any longer than ten minutes to remove it,” he assures her, his gaze still fixated on their clasped hands.

“That’s not the only reason,” she sighs. She’s surprised he hasn’t put it together yet.

But maybe he’s overdosed himself with suppressants and can’t smell how close she is, or he’s thinks she can wait until they’re to Canada to address it.

But the cramps in her stomach worsen, and every minute she’s with Julian, her arousal grows.

“Fuck, I can smell you, even with my injections,” he whispers, closing his eyes. “How close are you, baby?”

She grips his hand. “Hours,” she whispers. “I can’t leave until…”

But as Julian looks at her, his expression darkens. “You can’t leave until I’ve taken care of you,” he murmurs, his voice low.

She’s been careful to focus on anything but his scent and what it does to her body. Her nipples are painful against her clothing and her cunt aches, but she’s been so overcome by Julian’s reappearance that she’s pushed all her urges aside.

She nods slowly. “I want you,” she whispers. “I can’t leave, but I can talk to Mindy and see how long she can stay away…”

He leans into kiss her again, taking his time as his tongue explores her mouth. He tastes just as she remembered; warm, welcoming, and likehome.

“Let’s go to bed,” he whispers when they pull away. “Show me what you need, and I’ll take care of everything else.”

She hesitates as he pulls away. “I don’t know what Mindy will do if you’re here,” she says.

“I’ll take care of it,” he promises her, and she freezes.

“Wait, you can’t hurt her! Don’t—”

But he silences her with another kiss, her cry of protest muffled against his lips. “I willneverhurt your family,” he promises her when he pulls away. “Ever.Your care and happiness are my only goals now. Do you understand, baby?” he presses a kiss to her clammy forehead. “You said you trusted me before. Is that still true?”

She pauses at his question and sucks in a breath.

The last time she trusted him, he tended to her needs and kept her in his care.

He protected her from everything and helped her through an extremely vulnerable time.

Does she trust him?

Staring into his eyes, sensing the slight trepidation there, she makes a decision.

“I trust you, Julian.”

She leadshim to the guest bedroom and locks the door.

“Afraid someone will come in?” he asks, his eyebrow raised.

“No,” she whispers. “Just habit.”
