“You really don’t need to drive me home, I’ll get a taxi,” I protest as Jason helps me to shrug on my jacket.

“There’s no point in arguing, we are taking you home and that’s final,” Christian replies as he hands his card to the waitress.

“Why are you so against us dropping you off? Is there something you aren’t telling us?” Jason asks.

“Of course not!” I protest quickly.

“Then what’s the problem? You’ve always let us drop you off in the past,” he points out as we walk outside, and towards the parked car.

“Is it Carol? Doesn’t she know that you’re meeting us?” Christian asks catching up with us.

“No, she doesn’t, and I don’t want any arguments,” I admit. “She’s hurting after the separation,” I add quickly. The two guys look at each other and nod, seeming to communicate without actually speaking. Jason opens the passenger door for me. I stand staring at him as my heart races, he looks at me and I watch one side of his mouth lift into a small smile.

“We are taking you home, Jazzy. But …” he says quickly as I open my mouth to protest. “We’ll drop you off at the bottom of the street and watch until you go inside from there.” He reaches up and cups my cheek with his hand.

“We know the separation is hard on Carol, we don’t want to make things worse for her. But we need you to tell her we are still in your life.”

I nod as I look down at the floor. “I will, it just hasn’t been the right time,” I answer looking up and seeing Christian looking at us over the roof of the car.

“No time will be the right time, sweetheart. But your mum needs to know that we aren’t going anywhere, and although you are our priority, we are happy to help her as well,” Christian adds before nodding towards the car. “Come on, let’s get you home.”

I get into the car and let Jason close my door. Christian reaches over and takes my hand in his.

“Talk to your mum. Don’t hide us from her,” he insists as he lifts my hand and places a kiss on my knuckles. I feel my breath catch in my throat as I think about what it would be like if he kissed me on the lips. I quickly shake off the inappropriate thoughts and nod my head.

“I will,” I whisper. Christian smiles at me before he leans in and presses his lips to my cheek.

“Good girl.” As always his praise causes a knot to form deep in my stomach and lower which makes me press my thighs together. I’m still in my own world of inappropriate thoughts as Christian pulls away from the curb and we head towards my house.

We drive in silence for a short while, I’m exhausted and full after the biggest meal I’ve eaten in weeks. Whenever any of my stepbrothers take me out for dinner, they always make sure I have at least three courses. They say it’s their way of making sure I’m eating properly so they can look after me. I think they want to make sure I’m taking care of myself, the more I eat the more they question if I’m eating enough when they aren’t around.

“Is Tommy been giving you any problems now Carol is in the house?” Jason asks from behind. I turn to look at him shaking my head.

“No, everything’s been fine,” I reply.

“Has he been in touch at all? About school or the house?” Christian asks. I shake my head, again.

“Not since they split up,” I answer looking out the window at the passing streetlights, rather than at them.

“If he does, let us know. We don’t want him causing problems for you,” Christian adds. I look at him as I nod again not trusting myself to speak. I start feeling sick with nerves as we get closer to the street. The last thing I need right now is for Mum to see me with the guys, she will lose her shit.

As I see the turning to my street come into view, I quickly look at my house at the top of it to see if the lights are on or not. I can see a small amount of light shining through the gap in the front windows.

“Are you sure you don’t want us to come in and speak to Carol?” Christian asks as he takes my hand again. I quickly look at him and shake my head vigorously.

“That’s the last thing you should do,” I say quietly before turning in my seat and planting a kiss on his cheek forcing a smile. Christian and Jason share a look and for a moment I’m terrified they’re going to insist on walking me into the house like they usually do. Instead, Christian gives a small shake of his head and Jason sighs before climbing out of the car and opening my door.

“I’ll see you after your show next month, sweetheart,” Christian says pulling me into a hug. “If you need anything give me a shout,” he adds as he looks into my eyes.

“Thank you for dinner it was lovely,” I say with an extra smile before climbing out of the car and straight into Jason’s waiting arms. He holds me close before I feel him press a kiss to my head.

“Anything you need, just shout. I’ll see you in a month, Jazzy.”

I kiss him on the cheek and thank him also for dinner before heading towards my house.

I walk slowly in the hope they will drive off but of course, they don’t and won’t until they know I’m safely inside. I get to the front door and wave before taking a deep breath and slowly opening it.

I walk in and wait for the sound of my mother shouting, demanding to know where I’ve been, but I’m thankfully met with silence. Slowly I make my way into the house and can see how unkempt it is. I find out why when I walk into the lounge and see Mum passed out on the sofa with an empty bottle of vodka on the floor below her. There’s also an empty bottle of gin and several bottles of wine.
