“I’m sure your mother would prefer it if you moved in with them.”

I can’t help laughing as I take another sip of my drink.

“She really wouldn’t, we aren’t that close.”

“You seemed close today,” he points out reaching around to take the bottle from me and hand it to Maximus. I roll my eyes and reach around to take Sean’s bottle before having another sip.

“Only because it suits her. What better way to have everyone paying attention to you than to act like the loving mum and bride,” I sigh as I hand the bottle back. “I’ve livedawayfrom her more than I’ve livedwithher. I’m used to being alone it’s easier that way,” I add before forcing a smile on my face. Jason puts an arm around my shoulders and pulls me against him. I’m not used to people showing affection. I freeze for a moment before resting my head on his shoulder.

“Well, you have us now, so you aren’t alone anymore,” he says kissing the top of my head before releasing me with a smile.

I roll my eyes as I look out to sea, knowing that after this weekend I’ll probably never hear from them again.

Chucking my bag onto the bed, I rush to the wardrobe and start rummaging around for something to wear. After a long week of essay deadlines and exams, I need a night out to clear my head. Amber and Sophia, my best friends will be here soon to start getting ready. It’s already six and we plan on being out by eight.

The three of us have the best nights together. It started when we were sixteen and used to attempt to sneak into pubs and clubs pretending to be older than we were. When that didn’t work, we used to go to the local woods and drink whilst trying to keep warm. Since turning eighteen and can now get in everywhere, we take full advantage and go out whenever we get the chance. When we can’t afford to go out we come back here to the house I rent from my stepfather and stay in drinking and partying, still managing to have the best time.

I’m just pulling out my favourite little black dress when I hear my phone ringing. I look at the screen and smile.

“Hey Christian.”

“Hey sweetheart, you sound happy.”

“I’m getting ready for a night out, I’m in serious need of letting my hair down,” I reply as I start looking for the shoes that go with the dress.

“Who are you going out with?”

I pull the shoes out of the wardrobe and throw them next to my outfit.

“Amber and Sophia.” I open the drawer out from under my bed and start going through all my handbags for the perfect one.

“Is Damien going?”

I roll my eyes as I activate hands-free and place my phone on the side. Christian and the guys don’t even attempt to hide their dislike of my boyfriend, even though they only met him briefly once.

“No, it’s a girl’s night out. No men allowed.”

“Just be careful, don’t drink too much and make sure you get a taxi home.”

“I will, Dad,” I sigh rolling my eyes again. “I’m not stupid, I know how to look after myself. I’ve done it my whole life,” I add as I start pulling my long hazel hair out of the top bun it’s been in all day. Luckily it falls in long loose waves down my back. Perfect, one less thing to worry about.

“I know that sweetheart, but I worry, we all do. It’s only because we care.”

The guys have shown me time and time again that they care about my safety, sometimes though it can be smothering. My mother doesn’t care what happens to me when I go out, it’s hard to accept that the guys do.

“Jaz, you up there?” Sophia calls from downstairs.

“Yeah, come on up!” I call back before picking up my phone and turning off the hands-free. “I have to go, but I promise to behave and will text when I get up tomorrow.”

“Okay, enjoy yourself.”

“I will. See you later, Christian.”
