“I’ve seen what they are capable of and I have seen the way they are with you. They really would burn the world to ashes to protect you.”

“Do you ever regret working for them?”

They employed Layton after seeing the way he looked after me one night about nine months ago when I was so drunk I couldn’t stand. He had been a bouncer in the club I had been in. Maximus and Sean found me and took me home after giving Layton their business card, the rest is history. He now works for them full time watching my back.

“No, not only is the money good, but I enjoy my job, even when you are being difficult,” he adds with a smirk. I slap his arm as we reach the front door. I come to a stop and feel my chest tighten, now I’m here I’m not sure this is the best idea.

“You don’t have to do this you know; you could just leave the food on the doorstep and go.”

I shake my head and take a deep breath before opening the door.

“Be careful it was a mess last time I was here,” I warn him before stepping through the door.

Inside the house is quiet, I can’t hear or see anything. I head straight to the lounge and look around.

The place seems a little tidier than it did the last time I was here. It’s still far from how it was when I lived here alone, but there are no obvious signs of drugs and empty cans and bottles. It smells a damn sight better too.

“Mum? Are you here?” I call out and am greeted by silence once again. “I guess not,” I sigh as I continue to walk through the house and into the kitchen. I find the kitchen much better than it was three months ago. The bin is no longer overflowing and the sides are cleaner than they were.

“Let’s just leave this stuff on the table and she can put it where she wants it,” I whisper as Layton places the bags down. We quickly arrange the bags and I put the milk and cheese in the fridge before leaving a note.

Mum,

I popped by to see you and if you needed anything. I hope you are okay.

Happy birthday.

I place the note on top of the cake box which contains a rich chocolate cake, her favourite and look at Layton.

“Let’s get out of here.”

He offers me a sad smile and we head out of the door and back to the car.

I take one last look at the house before we drive off. I hope she is happy and safe, whatever she’s doing.

I wave goodbye to Layton before walking through the back door where I find Mrs Brown, the housekeeper in the kitchen cutting up some veg.

“Afternoon Mrs Brown, can I help at all?” I love when I get to help in the kitchen. We’ve started baking together now and again when all the O’Reillys are busy and I’m left home alone. I like those times when we put the radio on and just have a fun time making cookies and cakes. Mrs Brown makes the best pastries and has promised to teach me one day.

“No thank you, Jasmine love. Jason and Christian are waiting for you in the sitting room.”

“Why?” I ask, stopping in my tracks nervously. Mrs Brown looks up at me and smiles.

“Don’t look so nervous I’m sure you have nothing to worry about.”

“That’s easy for you to say, it’s not your ass on the line,” I point out walking through the kitchen and heading to the sitting room. I can hear Mrs Brown chuckling and I have to stop myself from rushing to my room and refusing to see the guys until they tell me what they want.

I know Layton would have told Christian that I went to Mum’s, and I’m sure he will have something to say on the matter. He was there last time and saw how badly she treated me. But I had to go today, even if to just leave a note.

I come to a stop outside of the sitting room door and take a deep breath to calm my nerves before walking inside.

Opening the door I’m greeted by the sight of the two older O’Reilly brothers. Both standing over the desk in their suit trousers and black shirts. Their broad and muscular shoulders are emphasised by the way their shirts tighten around them. I can tell they both had their hair cut today as the sides are almost shaved bare and the dark brown hair on the top of their heads has been tidied. Considering these two aren’t the twins in the family they both look almost identical from behind. The only difference is the way Christians tattoos flow up his neck and the back of his head.
