Though he raced after it, he was too late to see the plate number or get a good look at the car, but it had been virtually silent. That meant only one thing. It had been an electric vehicle.

Spinning around, he raced to the barn. Besides being worth a great deal of money, Stetson was priceless to him. Worried someone had heard Cody was gone and had arrived with a nefarious motive, Noah dashed inside…then paused to listen.

Everything was quiet.

As he peered into Stetson’s stall, the handsome stallion nickered his welcome. Quickly checking the other horses and foals, Noah let out a heavy, relieved breath. Everyone was fine, and nothing appeared to have been disturbed.

“Who the hell was that and what were they doin’ here,” he muttered, looking down at Sherlock sniffing around the floor. “Some watchdog you are. Why didn’t you bark? I know that damn car was quiet, but I thought hearin’ was your superpower.”

But as he finished speaking, a thought popped into his head.

Perhaps the nocturnal visit had been about Ellie.

Had they been followed from the Barnyard?

Striding to the house and stepping inside, he checked the windows and secured the doors, then moved quietly back to the bedroom. Quickly removing his clothes, he slipped into bed and snuggled beside her.

“Noah,” she mumbled sleepily.

“Hey, baby.”

“I’m glad you’re back.”

“Me too,” he muttered holding her tightly. “You can sleep now. I’m not goin’ anywhere.”

In her lavish bedroom overlooking the lake, Bethany stared out at the idyllic scene. But she was far from calm. Dinner with David Graham and Matt Thompson had been an interrogation disguised as conversation. She’d answered all their questions without batting an eye, but their presence in the house was a nuisance.

Her phone chimed.

She jumped, looked at the screen, then taking a breath, she picked it up and accepted the call.

“Hi, Mikey.”

“Good work. Eleanor went home with that cowpoke and she had a suitcase, but the boys couldn’t do a fucking thing. He has motion detector lights. They lit up that courtyard and a minute later he came out of his house. They barely got out of there.”

“Does it matter? She’s gone.”

“What do I always say?”

“Listen in on everyone. If you know what they’re talking about, you’ll know what they’re thinking and what they’ll do next.”

“Exactly. I can’t hear them if the boys can’t get into that house or barn.”

“And I’m stuck with that security guy and his friend snooping around this place,” Bethany replied, hoping to change the subject. “At least they’re in the East Wing.”

“Get to work on the other side of the house.”

“I’m not a complete idiot.”

“Hey, watch your mouth!”

“Sorry, this hasn’t been easy.”

“We never expected it to be, but you managed to scare Tom Mitchell and his daughter out of there, and trust me, those two bozos will be gone soon enough.”
