Early the following morning, Noah slipped from the bed, quietly dressed, and was about to creep out the door with Sherlock when Ellie groggily muttered his name. Moving back to the bed, he leaned over and kissed her cheek.

“It’s early, I have to feed,” he whispered. “Go back to sleep.”

“I can help.”

“You can help by gettin’ more rest. You need it. I’ll be back in a little while.”

“But—“

“Do as you’re told,” he said firmly, then kissed her again, strode from the room and down the hall.

As he grabbed a jacket from the closet and stepped out the front door, he was hit by a blast of cold air. Lifting his eyes and spying dark, distant clouds, a frown crossed his brow. It was his habit to check the weather before going to bed, but he’d been distracted. First, by his decadent roll between the sheets with Ellie, then the unknown, late night visitor.

Zipping up his coat against a cold gust and marching across the courtyard, he thought back to the unexplained vehicle. Berating himself for not having security cameras, he hurried into the barn and began the morning ritual. Feeding came first, then cleaning the stalls. But the unsettling incident stayed with him. Finally finished, he checked his watch. It was a reasonable hour, and he placed a call to Matt.

“Mornin’, Noah.”

“Hi, Matt, do you have a minute?

“Sure, what’s up?”

“I had a visitor last night.”

“What kind of visitor?”

“The unexpected, unknown kind, around midnight,” Noah replied solemnly. “I was leavin’ the house to check the horses, and blow me down, the motion lights were on and a car was leavin’. All I saw were tail lights, but it didn’t make a sound.”

“Huh, so I guess it was an EV.”

“Must’ve been,” Noah muttered. “It’s probably no big deal, just someone lost, or—“

“You don’t believe that for a minute,” Matt declared, interrupting him, “and neither do I. Does Eleanor know?”

“I haven’t mentioned it, and I don’t think I should. It will only upset her.”

“I agree. Do you have security cameras?”

“No, darn it, and I should.”

“What about Cody? Did he see anything?”

“Cody’s not here, he’ll be back in a few days.”

“I should talk to David about this. I’ll get right back to you.”

“Okay, thanks, Matt.”

Ending the call, Noah ambled across to Stetson’s stall.

“How ya doin’, buddy? I should take you on a trail ride. It’s been too long.”

“Breakfast is ready.”

Startled, Noah turned and found Ellie walking towards him wearing the sexy stretch riding jeans and a figure-hugging turtleneck sweater. He wanted to grab her hand, take her up to the hayloft and utterly ravage her.

“I thought you were sleepin,” he remarked, stepping forward and pulling her into his arms.

“I was, but I woke up a little bit ago and made us something to eat.”
