“Darn it,” he mumbled as his phone chimed. “I have to take this. Go back to the house. I’ll be right there.’”

She paused, then nodded, and walked away.

“Hey, Matt,” Noah said, lowering his voice. “Sorry, Ellie came in.”

“Is she gone?”

“Yep, what did David say?”

“He’s concerned and wants to play it safe. He’s sending over a security detail. Your place will be watched from both the road and that thicket of trees above the paddocks. If anything happens, call me and I’ll alert them.“

“That’s great, thanks, Matt.”

“There’s more. I’ll be there shortly to install cameras. They’ll be visible, which will also act as a deterrent. It won’t take long.”

“I hate to say this,” Noah began with a heavy breath, “but if David’s that worried maybe Ellie shouldn’t be here.”

“He just doesn’t want to take any chances. Besides, she can’t do better than you for a bodyguard. You won’t let her out of your sight.”

“You’ve got that right. Thanks, Matt. I’ll see you soon.”

As the call ended, Noah dropped his phone into his jacket pocket, called Sherlock, and hurried from the bar. When he entered the house, a delicious aroma tickled his nostrils.

“What smells so good?” he asked, heading down the hall and into the kitchen.

“I found your waffle maker,” Ellie replied with a happy smile.

“I can’t remember the last time I used that.”

“I have them in the oven keeping warm, and the coffee’s ready.”

“A fella could get used to this,” he declared, walking up and hugging her.

“I can’t cook many things, but what I do, I do very well. Have a seat and tell me what’s going on while I plate them for you.”

“Goin’ on?” he repeated as he quickly washed his hands.

“Yeah, you know, whatever it is you don’t want to tell me, and please don’t say it’s nothing.”

“You don’t miss a trick,” he said with a chuckle. “Matt’s comin’ over to put up a few security cameras for me.”

“For you, or me?” she asked pointedly as she placed the waffles and a mug of coffee in front of him.

He let out a sigh.

“It just a precaution, but I need them anyway. I’ve been meanin’ to get them installed for a while.”

“Actually, Noah,” she began solemnly, “I wouldn’t put anything past Bethany, and she met you. She could have followed us to The Barnyard then back here. God only knows what she’s up to, but for all we know, she has help.”

“Ellie, are you afraid of her? Genuinely afraid?”

“I didn’t used to be, but after what happened at the Kincaid parking lot, I am. And with only dad and me and her in the house, she had to be making those weird noises. But what the hell was she doing?”

“Let me hear them again.”

“Sure.”

As she picked up her phone and played the recording, he closed his eyes to listen.
