At the time, her request had been welcomed. It would be an opportunity for her and Ellie to get acquainted and hopefully, become great friends. At the right time he’d tell Ellie everything. But the two young women had been oil and water from day one.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

The moment they returned to the barn and climbed off the horses, Noah wrapped his arm around Ellie’s waist, pulled her against him, and planted his lips on hers in a quick, fervent kiss.

“Wow,” she said breathlessly as he released her. “What was that for?”

“Bein’ so damn sexy,” he exclaimed. “Are you complainin?”

“Not for a second.”

“Just as well,” he murmured huskily, landing a swift swat.

“Ow—and that was for…?”

“The same thing.”

As she laughed out loud, he grinned broadly, then released her and changed Stetson’s bridle for a halter and led him into the cross ties.

“Noah, what should I do with Candy?”

“I’ll take care of her,” he replied, taking the reins from her hands. “See if you can find Matt and ask him how he’s doin’ with the cameras.”

“Okay, and thanks again for taking me to the thicket. It was wonderful.”

“It was for me too. We’ll do it again soon.” As she turned and walked from the barn, his eyes followed her, roaming over her curvaceous backside so perfectly packaged in the stretch denim. “Looks like I’m in trouble,” he muttered, “But I’m gonna love every minute.”

Shaking himself, he quickly untacked the horses and brushed them off. But when he returned them to their stalls, they dropped into the shavings and rolled.

“Really?” he exclaimed, knowing they’d have to be brushed off again before he could blanket them. Stetson snorted as he stood up, shook himself, then put his head over the stall door asking for a treat. “You deserve it. You were a real gentleman,” Noah said with a smile, grabbing a carrot from a bucket nearby.

“Hey, Noah,” Matt called, marching into the barn. “I’m finished, and I’ve left all the information on your kitchen table. It explains how you connect to the systems. It’s easy, like one, two three. Call me if you have any problems.”

“Great, thanks.”

“Ellie’s gettin’ changed. When I told her I’m goin’ back to her house, she asked if I’d give her a lift so she could pick up her car.”

“Sounds good, but keep your eyes open. Did you hear what happened outside Clint’s store with Bethany?”

“She just told me.”

“I think that woman has a screw loose.”

“Sure sounds like it,” Matt remarked. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they stay clear of each other. I don’t relish the thought of breakin’ up a cat fight.”

“I’m ready,” Ellie declared from the barn entrance.

Lifting his eyes, Noah caught his breath. She had changed into tight pale blue jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt. She looked even sexier than she did in her riding clothes.

“Try not to forget anything,” he said as he and Matt walked up to join her. “Pack whatever you need, and keep your phone on.”

“Yes, Sir,” she quipped with a sassy wink.

He shot her a look, then leaned down and pecked her on the cheek.

“I’ll see you when you get back.”

As she and Matt headed to his truck, Noah leaned against the barn wall and watched them drive away.
