David and Matt were at the house.

She’d be safe.

But he was still anxious.

His earlier epiphany fired through his soul.

He cared about her.

Deeply.

“Dammit,” he muttered. “I’m not startin’ this thing between us with secrets. I’ve gotta tell you the truth as soon as I get the chance.”

On the drive back to the house above the lake, Ellie lifted a pen and pad from her bag and started making a list of the things she’d need. She began with her art supplies, but when it came to her clothes, she paused.

“Hey, Matt, do you have any idea how long I’ll have to be away from home?”

“Not a clue. I don’t even know why we have to leave. Do you?”

“Yes, but I’m not allowed to say.”

“Ah, then don’t. Pack for a week. If it turns out you still can’t return, you can always buy what you need.”

“Of course, thanks, Matt.”

As they had turned off the main street and started up the winding lake road, she lifted her eyes to gaze out at the water and noticed wind blown ripples.

“I do love looking at this every day,” she murmured. “It’s always changing. One minute it’s—shit! Matt!”

“What?”

“We just drove past a Tesla, and Bethany’s Ferrari was parked next to it.”

“Where?” he asked urgently, slowing down.

“At the first lookout, there are quite a few along the lake. What should we do?”

“What color was the Tesla?”

“Black, but we passed it before I could see the license plate.”

“Damn!” he muttered, touching David’s name on his bluetooth console.

“Hey, Matt,” David said, answering immediately. “What’s up?”

“I’m almost there and I have Ellie with me, but we just passed a black Tesla parked next to Bethany’s Ferrari at the first lookout above the lake.”

“No shit! I’m on my way.”

“Why didn’t you just turn around and go back?” Ellie asked as the call ended.

“If they spotted the truck and I went by again so soon it would be too obvious.”

“You’re right, I wasn’t thinking, probably because this is really creeping me out. It must be the same car that was at Noah’s last night…don’t you think?”

“Too much of a coincidence for it not to be, but it’s pretty stupid for Bethany to park right next to it so close to the house and where they can be seen. Although…”
