“Although what?”

“Well… you just said it’s creepin’ you out. Maybe that’s the desired result.”

“But—how would she know I’m on my way back?”

“Now that, Ellie, is an excellent question,” he replied as he passed David on his way down the road, “and I may have an answer very soon.”

“Matt, I’m very glad you’re a part of this.”

“Thanks, Ellie. When David asked me to join him I couldn’t say no. I have a history with this place, along with Devlin and Callum.”

“Can you tell me about it?” she asked as he drove through the gates and accelerated towards her cabin.

“Some of it, and maybe I will when this is behind us,” he replied, rolling to a stop. “Do you mind if I take a look in your purse?”

“No, but it’s a mess.”

“What a surprise,” he quipped with a wink.

She smiled, but watching him rummage through it her heart began to beat a little faster.

“And here you are,” he said with a sigh, lifting out what looked like a small black cap. “This is a tracker, and it’s how Bethany knew you were on your way back here. It’s also how she knew where you were staying.”

“Oh my gosh. Where was it?”

“In the corner of the zippered compartment.”

“Matt…what does this mean?”

“That’s the second excellent question you’ve asked, but other than they want to keep tabs on you, I don’t know yet.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Knowing Bethany wasn’t on the property to bother Ellie, Matt drove up to the house to gather together his few belongings. As he walked inside and headed to his room, he decided to take a detour.

Though he didn’t expect to find anyone in Bethany’s suite, when he arrived at her door, he knocked. There was no response, but when he turned the handle he discovered it was locked. One of the many things he’d learned in the Special Forces was, always be prepared, and there was one item he never failed to have handy.

Reaching inside his jacket, he lifted a small, leather wallet from the breast pocket. Quickly unzipping it, he crouched down, studied the lock, then lifted out the applicable tool. In seconds the door was open, and he stepped into a cozy living area with double doors leading to a bedroom.

The first thing to catch his eye was a laptop sitting on a desk by the window. He wasn’t surprised to find it password protected, but he discovered a leather binder in the top drawer with three pages of scribbled notes which he photographed to read later.

Not seeing anything else of interest, he moved into the bedroom. Predictably, an empty suitcase sat on the bed surrounded by clothes waiting to be packed, and there was nothing of note in the bedside table. But when he entered the bathroom, he spotted a padlocked vanity case.

Quickly lifting out the leather wallet and finding the right tool, he deftly popped it open. Inside he found several small bottles with glass eye droppers, each labeled with a single letter, and packages of over-the-counter sleeping aids.

He was about to open the glass bottles when he heard the unmistakable sound of the Ferrari’s powerful engine coming up the drive. Hastily taking photographs, he closed the case, then hurried from the suite. He was bolting up the stairs when his phone rang. It was David.

“Hey, David. Any luck?” he asked, keeping his voice low. “Did you see the Tesla?”

“Even better,” David replied. “When I drove past the lookout, the Ferrari was the only car there, so I put my foot down and took the road into town. Sure enough, I spotted a black Tesla and tailed it through Main Street and across the bridge to the new hotel.”

“Did you get a good look at the driver?”

“When he handed the keys to the valet I snapped some decent pictures and got the license plate number. I’ll send them. What about you? Is anything happening at the house?”

“Bethany just got home, and yeah, I have some news of my own, but I’ll fill you in later. I want to get back to the cabin in case she decides to hassle Eleanor. By the way, have you seen the clouds over the mountains?”

“I can’t say I noticed.”
