“Ah…OK, so that’s how they found who did it?” Brian let out a a sigh of relief.Thank God.

“Unfortunately, my bike had been parked away from where the cameras were pointed,” Cruz said.

Even better. They wouldn’t have seen me.

Brian was ready to change the subject, but Cruz wasn’t finished. “They did show that there was a Tesla parked there at the same time.”

“How was the Tesla involved?” The crease in Brian’s forehead told Cruz that he was worried about something, and Cruz wanted to find out what it was.

“Nope, it was just parked there,” Cruz said.

So, why bring that up?Brian looked confused.

“Hunter tracked down the owner of the Tesla, and they looked at the Sentry mode camera footage. It was fortunate that the owner had kept the footage and it hadn’t been overwritten.”

“Why would he do that?” Brian asked.

“He’d heard a noise and thought someone was tampering with his car. It wouldn’t have been the first time for him, unfortunately. He’d been coined earlier that day but didn’t have that footage,” Cruz said. “So, he rushed out and stored the footage and then he heard the crash…my accident.”

“So how was it that the footage he kept helped you?” Brian asked.

“It showed the side of my bike.” Cruz thought he saw Brian’s expression change when he said that. Cruz looked at Eden and she raised her eyes ever so slightly. She’d noticed too. “It was just enough to see that somebody had come along and put the boot into my bike, right where the electrical box was for the lights.”

Brian sucked in a breath then. It was enough for Eden to ask: “Are you okay, Brian?”

Fuck…it was my fault.Sweat beaded across his forehead. He wished he could stop that happening. “Yeah, sure. I'm just amazed that Hunter managed to get all that. So lucky,” Brian said.

“Yeah, really lucky,” Cruz said, as he was staring Brian down.

“So, did they manage to track down the guy who kicked your bike?”

Boots said, “Guy?” He’d been sitting near them, eavesdropping, and Brian’s head snapped towards him when he said that. Brian didn’t reply, so Boots said, “You said ‘guy.’ Cruz didn’t tell you that it was a man.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Brian said. “It’s just…well, you wouldn’t expect a woman to do something like that, would you? I just assumed…”

“The person who had coined the Tesla was a woman, Brian,” Boots said. “You can’t really assume anything these days.”

“No, I guess not.”

“But it was,” Cruz said.

“What?” Brian had been looking at Boots when Cruz said that.

“It was a guy.”

“Oh good. Well, I’m glad they found him,” Brian said. “Anyway, you probably don’t want to talk about that anymore. Such a nice day.”

“No, I’m happy to talk about it all you like,” Cruz said. This fucker knows something.

“No, no problem, Cruz. I might just go stretch my legs before we ride again.”

Cruz ignored that completely and said, “There wasn’t enough footage from the Tesla to show who it was. And the direction that he had come from, and went to, was also out of range of the motel cameras at the time.”

“OK, well, that’s a shame,” Brian said. He took a bite of his Subway and acted like he was no longer interested.

“They probably wouldn’t have done anything about it anyway, because it wasn’t an intentional thing to cause an accident.”

“Sure,” Brian said. “No, it wouldn’t have been intentional. No…how could anyone think of what could happen from something like that?”
