Cruz could tell by the look on Brian’s face that he was onto him, and he knew that if he tried hard enough, he might eventually give in and admit it was him. As it turned out, he didn’t have to try hard at all.

“Hey, Cruz,” Brian said, finally. “I need to talk to you about something when you’ve got a moment.” Brian looked at the others, who were all looking back at him now. “Alone, if that’s OK?”

As Cruz got up off the blanket he lifted his eyebrows to Eden, and she gave him a sad smile. She knew now too. It was Brian’s fault.

Cruz walked past Brian, who got up off the ground and followed him to their bikes. When he got there and turned back to him, Brian said. “I’m so sorry, man.”

Cruz nodded. He knew it was a mistake, and although he had suffered so much from that stupid unprovoked moment of madness, and someone had lost their life…he had let it go a long time ago now. He knew that revisiting the anger he’d had when he first found out someone had done that wouldn’t add any value to his life. It wouldn’t bring Wendy’s life back. Brian would have to live with what he’d done. That would be his punishment.

Cruz wasn’t prepared for what Brian was about to tell him though.

“Wendy was my wife.”

LOVEBIRDS

Cruz was seatedbeside Eden once again on their blanket. He’d left Brian standing beside his bike. He looked over at him now and Brian was lighting up a cigarette. He’d have to live with what he’d done. Cruz actually felt sorry for the guy. He couldn’t have known what the consequences of his actions would be.

“Wendy ruined two people’s lives, mine and Brian’s, and her own had ended when she’d decided to cheat on Brian,” Cruz said to Eden when he told her what Brian had admitted to doing.

Cruz didn’t know it yet, but she’d ruined three people’s lives. The third, her crazy-ass father, Jimmy Hanson, was damaged goods and waiting to end Cruz’s life too…and most likely Brian’s.

“That’s so sad,” Eden said. “People let their emotions ruin their lives and everyone around them...and for what?”

She was looking at Brian too. Brian was leaning against his bike seat and he was talking into his cell phone. It looked like he was having heated words with someone. When he’d finished talking and put his phone back into his pocket, he took a long drag of his cigarette and flicked the remains onto the ground. And then, just like that, he threw his leg over the seat, started his engine, and drove away from them.

“Where’s he going?” Eden asked.

“No idea,” Cruz said. “Maybe his time with us is over. He’s found out what he needs to know, and he’s gone.”

“Isn’t that the way to Abilene?” Eden asked.

“It is,” Cruz told her. “Who knows…we might see him this evening. Strange guy.”

“Yeah. There was always something going on under the surface. At least we know now,” she said.

“And we’re not going to let it ruin our trip, are we?” He leaned in and gave her a kiss.

“Where the fuck’s he gone?” Razor asked Cruz. Cruz shrugged his shoulders. “We’re ready to leave if you two lovebirds are too.”

Eden and Cruz looked at one another and smiled.

Lovebirds?Eden liked that.

Brian wantedto get to Abilene before the others. He had a feeling that Jimmy knew where they were going and he’d be there waiting. He didn’t believe me. He won’t be in San Antonio. What the fuck was I thinking?Brian was leaning against his bike smoking a cigarette after he’d told Cruz it was him.

He pulled out his phone and called Bo. “Hey, man, how’s it going?”

“Where are ya?” Bo asked.

“I’m going to Abilene.”

“To meet Jimmy?” Bo said.

Fuck.“You told him?”
