This was part of the deal. Alek’s world of demons would be intimidating; I knew that when I agreed to this.

They had no idea who I really was. What my worth really meant.

I would be safe with Alek.

Right?

“Hey,” Alek said, shaking my shoulder lightly. His voice was shockingly gentle. “You okay?”

I nodded in response, not trusting myself to speak.

“Come with me,” he whispered. “We should get out of here before the blood bonding starts. Trust me, you don’t want to be a part of that.” Alek grabbed my hand and began pulling me through the crowd.

We were heading to the same door we entered from when the same man who spoke over the music earlier started a new announcement.

The music cut.

“Demons and darlings, let the annual blood bonding begin!”

ChapterNine

The music returned with a boom, playing even louder than the first time.

Cheers erupted through the basement, and the already-dim lights grew even darker.

Adrenaline pumped through my veins, telling me to run. To hide. To get out of here.

But Alek’s grip on my hand didn’t budge.

“Okay,” I said. “What’s your big plan?” I could barely see through the crowd, but a few screams in the distance made the hair on my neck stand up.

People were being bitten.

“Just relax,” he said. We were standing next to a wall now, luckily somewhat out of the crowd. “I won’t bite you. We just have to pretend like I did.”

“How do I pretend that?”

Alek put his hands on my hips and pressed me against the basement wall, bringing his body dangerously close to mine. “Nobody’s paying attention to us,” he whispered. “Stay quiet.”

He rested his forehead against mine, mimicking the intimacy of the other blood bonds happening around us.

Until a pair of hands grabbed his shoulders and yanked him away.

“Back off, Blade!” he yelled.

“Are you not planning on biting your date, Alek?” Blade hissed, grabbing my upper arm and yanking me toward him. I stumbled into his large, sweaty body with a yelp.

“It’s none of your damn business,” Alek spat.

His words were strong, but I could tell we were in trouble.

Blade’s grip on me tightened as he held me in front of his chest. “It is, actually,” he growled. “Because this is theblood bonding. So if you don’t bite her, I guess I will.”

I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the pain. For the teeth that would sink into my flesh.

But instead, Blade was shoved away from me. I opened my eyes to see Zac tackling him to the ground with a force so strong, their bodies blurred from the speed.

Alek was at my side in an instant. His superhuman strength became evident when he pulled me to his side. “Are you okay?” he asked.
