“I’m fine!”

“She hasn’t been bitten!” Blade yelled from the ground.

Panic rose in my chest.

I knew where this was heading.

Alek may have planned on sparing me, but dozens of eyes were lingering on us now.

And Blade had exposed us.

I moved before I could think, before I could stop myself. I had lost my mind; that was the only explanation for what I did next.

I grabbed the front of Alek’s shirt and backed up until I was pressed against the cold basement wall once more.

“What are you doing?” he whispered. He braced his arms on the wall behind me, shielding me from the rest of the dark room.

“It’s okay,” I whispered back. “Just do it.”

I couldn’t see the shock on his face, but I felt him tense. “Are you sure?”

“If you don’t, he will,” I stated. We both knew it was true. “And I have a feeling it will be much worse if he does it.”

He rested his forehead against mine. My hands wrapped themselves around his waist as he moved to grip my chin with both hands.

“This won’t hurt,” he whispered. He slid a finger down my neck, across my collarbone, and gently tugged the fabric of my shirt to expose my shoulder.

I shivered.

Alek placed a soft, gentle kiss on the exposed skin there. I leaned harder against the wall behind me, grateful it was there to hold me up.

And then Alek’s sharp fangs sank into my flesh.

A shot of pain pierced through my body, followed by a heavy, unexpected wave of euphoria. My eyes rolled back, my ears filled with a moan that could’ve been mine, but at that moment, I didn’t care. Alek’s hands kept me standing as my legs weakened, knees giving way with the stars that sparked my vision. His grip tightened as his teeth sank deeper and deeper.

Heat of adrenaline rushed through my body, and a very different type of heat settled low in my stomach. What was he doing to me?

And as quickly as it had started, it was over.

Blade mumbled some sort of disappointment behind Alek, but neither of us turned to look. The music still blared through the basement, and I was thankful for the dark lighting that concealed how red I knew my face would be.

Whatever I had thought a demon bite would be,it wasn’t that.

I glanced down at my shoulder, finding Alek’s perfectly placed teeth marks and a small trail of blood.

But it didn’t hurt.

“I’m sorry, Lyra,” he whispered, close enough that only I could hear. “I swear to you I didn’t plan on going through with this.”

My entire body trembled, either from the rush of what had just happened or from the shock of euphoria I felt when his teeth were inside of me.

Was that normal?

“Um, it’s okay,” I replied. My head buzzed, a mixture of the emotions that flooded my body seconds ago and the drinks from earlier. My entire body swayed, and I was sure I would have fallen if it weren’t for Alek holding me up with a strong hand on my arm. Alek lifted the shoulder of my top and replaced it to its original position, ignoring the blood that would definitely be smeared underneath.

“It should heal fast,” he promised. “And at least now I won’t have to draw my bite indentations onto you next time we see my father.”

I tried to laugh, but it sounded foreign.
