“See?” he whispered. His face was so close to mine, I could see each of his thick eyelashes that framed his eyes. “This is what normal couples do.” With his free hand, he traced a long line up my arm.

“You’re telling me this is how we’ll be sitting when we get dinner with your father?” I breathed, trying to break the tension.

Alek smiled, and his perfect teeth only made my stomach sink deeper.

I wasn’t supposed to be feeling this. His touch shouldn't have this reaction on me. He was a demon, and this was all for show.

But if that were true, why was he looking at me like that?

“Maybe,” he whispered, inching closer to me. “Or maybe not. I like to be prepared for everything.”

I didn’t back away as he leaned down, resting his forehead against mine. My body erupted in sensation, every single one of my senses becoming aware of his skin against mine. His fingertips teased me. The movements likely came subconsciously to him, but I had never been touched like that before. So gentle, so delicate.

“Lyra?” he whispered.

“Yes?”

“Have you ever been kissed?”

“Yes,” I answered quickly. Too quickly.

“I mean a real kiss,” Alek explained. “And our deal doesn’t count.”

A wave of embarrassment flushed my cheeks. Silence passed between us before I answered, “No.” Without pulling away, Alek let a strand of my hair fall through his fingers as he twirled it around. “Will you teach me?” I asked before I could process the words.

What the hell, Lyra? Where is this coming from?

Alek smiled, and I would have pulled away if it weren't for his hands on my body. Those damn fingertips.

“It would be my pleasure,” he muttered. His hand moved up my arm and settled on my neck. He pulled away, just enough to look into my eyes. “Relax,” he whispered.

That would be impossible.

Alek moved slow—torturously slow—as he lowered his mouth to mine. His soft lips touched mine gently, and my body froze. He stilled against me for a few seconds, letting me relax under his touch, before pulling away.

I took a breath. “That’s all I’ve been missing?” I whispered.

Alek grinned, and I found myself unable to look away from his mouth. “No, Lyra, that is not what you’ve been missing.”

His fingers tightened around my neck as his lips met mine again. He applied more pressure this time, and the heat in my body increased as I kissed him back.

I couldn’t think about anything other than the way he touched me, the way his hands held me gently as his lips pushed against mine. I moved my hand to his arm, then his shoulder. His muscles contracted beneath my touch. His lips moved slowly, giving me time to learn his movements.

I mimicked him until it felt natural, our mouths dancing together. My hand slid from his shoulder down to his chest. A low purr of approval was the only reaction from him.

As the seconds passed on, the kiss intensified. My entire body buzzed with electricity as his hands gripped tighter on my body.

Alek’s tongue slid against my lower lip in silent invitation. I opened my mouth, letting him guide me into a deeper kiss.

Andholy shit, it felt good.

My mind spun. Alek shouldn't be touching me like this. We shouldn't be doing this.

I pushed his chest away, just enough so our kiss broke.

Our breath blended together in the inches between us. “That,” he started, “is what you’ve been missing.”

He stared into my eyes, a small smile spreading on his perfect mouth.
