Demon, my mind whispered. He’s ademon, and you’rekissing him.

I cleared my throat and sat up on the couch. “Well,” I said, “let’s hope we don’t have to dothatwith your father watching.”

Alek laughed as he sat up next to me. “Yeah,” he mumbled under his breath, “let’s hope not.”

My face burned. The way Alek had touched me, the way he kissed me. Is that what I had been missing out on this entire time? My heart raced with adrenaline. I had never kissed anyone before, but somehow it felt so right. So natural.

“What are you thinking?” Alek pushed, interrupting my thoughts.

“I–I’m thinking… I’m thinking I’m a little behind on this. And I should have learned how to kiss when I was a teenager.”

His smile was soft. “You’re perfect. Teenage years are for making mistakes and being stupid. You didn’t miss any of that.”

I stared into his eyes. My chest fluttered in a way it had never done before, sending a swarm of butterflies into my stomach. Alek was making me feel things I had never felt before; he showed me things I had never seen.

I tore my gaze away from him and stood from the couch, reminding myself that this was just a deal.

Just a deal. It meant nothing.

“You should probably go,” I whispered. “I don’t want my neighbors getting suspicious.”

He paused for a few seconds before responding, “Right. Of course.” I watched him scan the room as he leaned against the open window. “Goodnight, Lyra.”

“Goodnight, Alek.”

In one swift motion, he hauled himself up and out the window. I exhaled as I slid the glass shut behind him.

The second he was out of sight, my hand moved to my swollen lips.

Alek had kissed me.

ChapterFourteen

Ididn’t hear from Alek for two days. Two days, and then a text.

“Dinner at eight. I’ll pick you up.”

My gut twisted as I read the text over and over. This was it. This was the night we ate dinner with Alek’s father.

I scrambled to find an outfit that was in any way appropriate for a dinner with Alek’s father—the demon king.

He’s not a real king, I reminded myself. He was just a regular guy who simply wanted to know more about the girl his son has been spending time with.

That, and the fact that he could probably kill me in the blink of an eye. But now that I thought about it, Alek could probably kill me in an instant, too. And he had yet to do such a thing.

Perhaps demons weren’t all that bad.

Alek picked me up and managed to only make one snarky comment about the way I crawled through my window with a skirt and heels on.

Alek held the car door open for me as I slid in then shut it behind me, walking around the vehicle to join me on the other side. With a deep sigh, he turned the car on and pulled away. We drove for a few minutes through the city until we approached a stone wall with a black gate.

“This is where you live?” I asked.

Alek drove through the gate and up the paved, circular driveway to a massive house sitting on the hill. Trees surrounded us, and the black stone of the building nearly blended into the darkness. Dim lights lit the driveway ahead.

“It sure is,” Alek responded. His teeth clenched as the car halted to a stop.

“Why do you seem so nervous?” I asked him. “You’re supposed to be the calm one here, remember?”
