Natalie laughed, too. Her chocolate curls bounced with her as she jumped up and down to the music with her arms in the air. Together, we shared that feeling of euphoria, that feeling of freedom. If this was what Natalie was experiencing every time she came to a party like this, I now understood her lifestyle.

I would kill for more moments like this one. It felt soright.

I wasn’t sure how long we stayed like that, but I became addicted to the pure joy that grew and grew as we danced. Natalie and I took small breaks to take more shots of tequila, which only pulled me further into that place of bliss.

This was the version of me I had dreamt about. This was the version of me that I had quit believing in, becausethisLyra was never supposed to see the light.

Yet here we were.

I became so used to bodies bumping up against mine that I didn’t even notice the man moving to dance behind me.

Natalie was already enthralled in the hands of another man, dancing in his arms as if she belonged there all along.

This should have scared me. It should have felt inappropriate and foreign and downright wrong, but it didn’t.

The stranger’s hands fell on my hips, lightly at first, as if he were asking for permission.

To him, I’m sure it was a simple gesture. He had probably danced with hundreds of women this way. To me, though, his touch was intoxicating.

The lightest movement sent a thrill of excitement through my body. Even over my leather jacket, I could feel every centimeter of space where he touched me.

I didn’t turn around, not at first. Instead, I continued dancing how I had been; letting the music control my movements. The body behind me did the same, blending with me until we became one force on the dance floor.

After a few minutes, I leaned deeply into him. The heat of his body only turned up the level of exhilaration still rolling through me. That, and the subtle scent of sandalwood.

“You’re a great dancer,” the stranger murmured into my ear. His breath kissed my cheek as he leaned in to talk, sending a pleasant shudder down my spine. I decided to turn around, to finally look at the man I had been dancing with for the last few minutes.

And my jaw nearly dropped.

Dancing behind me had been the sexy man I made eye contact with across the bar earlier. With his face just inches from mine, his sharp bones made him look dangerous and threatening, his bright green eyes even more intense.

“Thank you,” I replied. I had never been that close to a man before. Only a couple of seconds passed before I became very aware of the fact that his hands were still resting on my hips.

Maybe it was the tequila, or maybe it was that shadow of a voice that had been screaming at me tolive. Either way, I took a small step toward him and placed my arms over his shoulders as we continued to dance.

A small smile from the stranger told me it was the right move.

More euphoria. More dancing.

Adrenaline fueled me as I stared into those neon green orbs, completely enthralled by the man before me.

He seemed just as interested. His menacing eyes didn’t leave mine as the song flickered from one to the next, over and over again until sweat rolled down my neck.

I never wanted that moment to end.

“Care for a drink?” he asked. We were both out of breath and glistening in sweat. I didn’t want to stop, but I reluctantly agreed and let him pull me out of the crowd and back to the bar.

“Wow,” I said once we got there. “This is incredible! I didn’t know dancing could be so much fun.”

The stranger smiled at me, which elicited another thrill of excitement.

“Not a big dancer?” he asked. He quickly ordered two shots of tequila from the bartender without having to ask what I was drinking. I stared at him, eyebrows raised, until he noticed. “What?” he asked. “I’m observant.”

“I can see that,” I replied. “I think some people would call that creepy.”

“I believe some people would also say that drinking and dancing in a room full of strangers is considered creepy, but we let things like that slide here at Night Raven.”

He had a point. I picked up my shot of tequila. “You come here a lot, then?”
