“Hey, Ledge,” I heard Ever call out to me.

“What’s up, Ever?” I yelled back, then whispered, “Nigga, you got me on speakerphone?”

“Ain’t shit she ain’t never heard before.”

“Speaking of which, why aren’t you taking Halo out to dinner? Forcing her out of the house, today? It’s her day.”

“I know and fuck going outside, if she’d let me in, I’d be cool in the house with her.”

“Well, she won’t be there.”

“What you mean?” I asked, partially confused. “She told me she canceled her plans. That’s why I didn’t get baby girl.”

“Yeah. She did, but I couldn’t let her sit in the house sad today. I’m taking her to dinner.”

“Sad? My baby been sad?” My heart ached at the thought of Halo feeling anything remotely close to what I was feeling without her in my space the last few weeks.

“Yes, Ledge. Did you expect anything different? You practically broke the girl’s heart.”

“And, she keeps breaking mine for it. Every fucking day, my shit breaks when I don’t wake up to her.”

“Hers, too.”

The wheels in my head began to turn as Ever continued.

“She doesn’t know what to do with herself.”

“I know what to do with her,” I admitted, “And, I can’t have my baby over there sad and fucked up bout me when I’m right here –wanting to be there.”

“This nigga in love, love,” Luca chuckled.

“That makes two of us, then, huh?” I quickly reminded him.

“Three of us,” Ever corrected.

“Yo, Ever, I’m trying to get pretty lady back, tonight. Fuck tomorrow. I might need a favor.”

“Whatever you need, Ledge.”

“Aight, here’s what I’m trying to do…”

Daddy’s coming home…

“How are you feeling?” Ledge asked as he placed his fork on his plate. He was always so willing to give me all of him, his undivided attention in any and every way possible.

“About the baby?” I asked, setting my fork down as well.

Equal effort,I told myself. That’s what I wanted to give Ledge from this moment forward. The same amount of work he was putting in, I wanted to put in. It was only fair. He deserved that and so much more.

“About everything?”

“I’m feeling so much,” I confessed, “I feel like my heart has been broken a little more each day with you being gone. I just– I feel like I’ve been drowning. It was until I saw you that I came up for air. You do that for me, Ledge. You give me life. While I’ve read a million times that you should let no one complete you and be whole on your own; the truth is I’m not. I’m hardly anything without you. Some freak of nature is about it. But, when I’m by your side I feel like… more like a force of nature. I don’t want to fight it anymore. I don’t want to fight you anymore. I just want to give to you what you’ve given to me. Love, patience, grace, mercy, kindness, and effort. I want to give you all those things and so much more but I just need you to do one thing for me.”

“What?” he asked, leaning forward.

“Don’t go breaking my heart, again.”
