“That is possibly true.”

“I know. So, let’s just keep it this way. In a few weeks, I’ll feel better about you being home when I leave. I’ve been talking to Kirklynn about it.”

“Good. When you leave her, what are you doing?”

“Coming home to recharge. After all these months, I still don’t know how I’ll feel by the end of a session. Each one is a little different.”

“But, you’ve been better the last few months. Give yourself credit.”

“They don’t take a toll on me as much as they used to.”

“That’s how you know you’re on the right track to healing.”

“I know.”

“I’m going to let you take off. I know you’re still sitting in the driveway.”

“I am. How’d you…” I paused to turn around. Surely enough, Ledge was walking up the driveway.

“Babe,” I fussed, though I was so happy to see him that I was instantly emotional. Tears swam in my orbs.

“The hard part is over. You’re out now,” he told me as he knocked on the window, “Now, roll it down and kiss me goodbye.”

“I don’t like goodbyes.”

“This one only means goodbye for now. Never forever.”

“Okay.”

I ended the call before pressing the button to roll down the window. He leaned in and kissed me once on the forehead, another time on the nose, and then on my lips.

Once.

Twice.

Three times on the lips before pulling back.

“I love you,” he said to me.

“Immensely.”

“See you later, pretty lady.”

Istepped into Eisenberg’s Smiles with something I didn’t exude as often as others –confidence. I could feel it in the way that I walked and the way that my hips swayed from one side to the other. So much work had gone into building my self-esteem and confidence over the last few months and each time the results showed I knew that it had been worth it.

“Well, don’t you look pretty,” Momma Eisenberg sang, walking toward me with her hands outstretched.

“Thank you.”

I swallowed the knot in my throat and handed over Lailah. The second my hands were free, I pushed back the finely pressed strands of hair behind my ear. The nervous habit reappeared each time my silk press was in season.

“Gone, now. Is there more milk in there?”

She pointed toward the small bag in my hand. It was all I was allowed to bring with me. She had everything the children needed in her office, which she’s expanded for a private care center for her grandchildren. She’d created a private daycare inside of her private daycare. It was hilarious but it screamed Eisenberg. It wasn’t hard to see where Lyric got her antics from.

“Yes. More milk is inside.”
