“No!”

“There’s no shame in it, honey,” she crooned, ignoring my protest. “Adrenaline will have you doing strange and dangerous things. I wouldn’t blame you if there was no adrenaline involved, either. Sariel is a fine man.”

“I am not screwing Sariel!” I hissed. “Please stop. He’s not the man I thought he was, but we’re not— it’s not like that.”

Rebecca went quiet. I knew she was about to say something to me that would make my stomach cramp with how truthful it was. “But you want it to be like that. Don’t you?”

I don’t answer her. “Where are my nieces? And how are you, Rebecca? You haven’t had any issues lately, have you?”

“The twins are asleep, and Alpha Homer stopped by yesterday looking for you. Said he hadn’t seen you around in a while. We told him you were visiting a friend… I think he knew we were lying, but he asked that we give him a call when we see or hear from you again.”

I frowned. “You don’t think he’s working with the Upper Council?”

“Aria, if the Alpha on the Upper Council asked him to find you, he’d have to choose between forfeiting his life…”

She raised a valid point. I couldn’t expect loyalty from anyone. “How’s Harry?”

“Trying to get me pregnant because he thinks a child would be a good distraction from the fact that you’re running around who knows where with the son of Azazel fucking Ambrose, doing who knows what.”

I’m torn between wanting to burst into laughter and gagging at the imagery. “Please, never talk to me about your sex life again.”

She sighed. “I miss you, Aria. I wish everyone would just get a grip. There isn’t an evil bone in your entire body.”

“It’s hard to convince people who have been conditioned to believe something to instead believe another thing that directly contradicts their beliefs.”

“This is just very gross of all parties involved. When you come home after beating their asses, I’ll have the most expensive bottle of wine I can afford on ice, waiting for you.”

I laughed. “We’d need a drinking week. One night wouldn’t be enough time for me to unload what the hell my life has been in the last few days. Who knows how long it will take for this to be dealt with, and by then, I’ll havesomany stories to tell you.”

“Take notes,” she suggested cheerfully, though I could hear the disappointment and pain in her voice again.

She was hurting because there was nothing she could do to help me. And I was breaking because I couldn’t promise her that I’d come home alive.

“I will,” I answered. “I promise. And I’ll stay safe.”

“Please,” Rebecca breathed. “Please, stay safe.”

“See you soon.”

“I will. And hey, life is too short not to bone the pretty ginger.”

I groaned and hung up. I missed my sister and family; weirdly enough, Aggy and Mrs. H, too. I missed my freedom.

Sariel and Credence paused their conversation when I stepped out of the room.

“How are they?” Sariel asked. “Johnny said they seemed okay when he checked up on them?”

“You sent Johnny to check on Rebecca?”

Sariel’s brows furrowed. “Yes. I wanted to ensure Azazel hadn’t touched them after his visit.”

I had to swallow around the sudden urge to launch myself at him, wrap him in my arms, and squeeze him so hard his head would pop from the amount of gratitude I was filling him with.

“They’re okay,” I said. “Alpha Homer passed by looking for me, but other than that, there was nothing suspicious to report.”

“He must know I’m with you by now,” Sariel mused.

Credence scowled. “He’ll try to draw you out using Lucy or Mikey. That little dick fucker.”
