It shrugged its big shoulders. “The Upper Council initially voted for torturing it out of you, but my Lord intervened and offered his services. You see, he is as curious about you as everyone else. Not enough to save you and risk upending the Council, of course, as he hasfarmore important things to deal with, but every now and again, Earth produces something that gets his attention. As it stands, that would beyou, wolf.”

I gulped. I didn’t ask who his Lord was, as that was obvious. I remained quiet and let it speak.

“The Council is curious about your mate bond, and I thank you for trusting the angel enough to divulge not only that, but also your capabilities. It will be appreciated, and further used against you during your trial.”

“Is Neo really—”

“Oh, yes. The angel became too curious. He’s dying before you, I believe? You’re themain event,” the demon tittered. “You are strangely pleasant to be around, you know. It is a pity you will be gone by midnight, if not sooner. You would make an interesting servant for my Lord. I hope you never forget me, wolf, because I will not forget you. I am Barimuz, Archdemon of the Ninth Circle, and right hand to the right hand of our Lord, Lucifer. I will be waiting for you in Hell.”

And then the demon was gone.

It simply vanished. There was no sound or residual magic; it was just gone.

I was hyperventilating. Tears dripped down my cheeks as I stared at the spot it had occupied not seconds before. I felt hollow and numb as I took in Neo laying face down on the floor.

I could see his back moving, which meant he was alive. That was good, at least. I was proud of myself for being able to separate the Neo who’d manipulated and used me for information from the Neo lying unconscious on the floor after being used.

I reached for Sariel down the bond. My shoulders jumped at the jumble of unintelligible thoughts that flooded through.

They’d drugged him again. Even his angel seemed to be feeling the effects. Our connection had begun to dim like before, yet I had no energy to spare.

With tears streaming down my face, I prayed for both my unconscious cellmate and my drugged, half-dead soulmate.

Even I wasn’t sure of what exactly I said in my prayer. Half of it was me ranting about the unfairness of my situation, and while I was aware that I should really be praying to find a way out of the situation I was in, I instead hoped that Rebecca had reunited with the twins and they were all safe.

In the midst of begging for a miracle, it dawned on me that there might not be any friends from Neo coming, and I could very well be on my own.

Immediately, I reached for Sariel again, hoping for a shred of comfort.

My heart skipped a beat when I caught a snippet of my name. And then dread filled me as I heard the other snippets.

He was arguing with himself about me.

…fallen-blood wolf…murderer…

Aria…of them…murderer…

Mate. My mate. Murderer.

Pain shot through me. I had to slam the door on our connection before I heard anything else.

It was entirely up to get me out of here, yet I had no fucking clue what I was going to do. I’d mapped the exits from the time spent stretching my ability to sense the wolves around me, but even a full three-dimensional map of this place wouldn’t help if I couldn’t leave this godforsaken room.

Hopelessness.

That was the emotion that began to trickle through me. Sheer hopelessness.

Maybe I could escape when the Paras came to take me to my execution, but I was still bleeding from that shallow cut on my throat days later. I was exhausted and hungry and miserable, so much so that I was starting to wish for death.

Anger was coursing through me when Neo stirred. I didn’t even bat an eye when he rolled onto his back, his wings bending up the walls on both sides of the room.

“What the fuck was that?”

“An Archdemon,” I answered robotically.

“I beg your pardon?” Neo snapped up, wings folding into his back. There was something cleaner about him now; before, he was just beautiful, but now, even with bags under his eyes and greasy hair, he was resplendent.

“You were possessed by an Archdemon.”
