“Barimuz,” Neo growled. “Did he hurt you?”

I stared at him for a long moment. “Did you not know?”

“I’ve been unconscious for most of the time you’ve been in here,” he admitted. “Like a long uncomfortable nap.”

“He knows everything,” I said more to myself than anything else.

“So it’s true? You’re mated?” He took a step towards me, but froze when I raised my gaze to glare at him. “Right. No questions after what just happened.”

“You wouldn’t happen to have friends who plan to break you out, do you?”

Neo’s gaze darkened. “My friends are dead. My family is dead. The Upper Council killed them.”

Silence fell between us.

“How are we getting out of here?”

“I don’t know…”

We locked eyes. Though doubt clouded my mind, I felt that I could trust him. Whether it was my current shitty resolve or something, I couldn’t be sure, but I felt that this was the real Neo Griffith.

“I’m Aria Gribald, by the way,” I said, extending my hand to him.

Neo glanced down at my hand with something akin to sadness, and then he took it.

“Napoleon Griffith, but you can call me Neo,” he said.

“Nice to officially meet you Neo. Now let’s figure out how the hell we’re getting out of here before our inevitable deaths.”

“Right,” he grinned. “Let’s get on that.”

Neither of us moved.

“We’re fucked,” he said.

“Completely.”

NOT A MIRACLE

Sariel

Iwas dragged out of unconsciousness by an overwhelming presence.

My angel was folded over onto his knees, his head pressed to the floor of my mind in prostration. Meanwhile, I was disoriented, exhausted, and barely functioning.

Whoever was here, they certainly hadn’t come to hurt me. Not that I would have been able to do much in my current state if they had.

I sensed them step up to me. A soft sizzling sound filled the room, following which I was sent falling through the air. I had a wild ‘what the fuck?’ moment right before I slammed into the floor.

They’d freed me from my chains.

I glanced up. My vision was hazy from the pain coursing through me—I could vaguely make out wings, multiple pairs of them. Or maybe I was seeing double. I couldn’t tell.

They crouched over me, and despite their face hovering right above mine, I couldn’t make out a single feature. I couldn’t even make out their scent.

I laid there for a second, trying to regain my bearings, only to realize that I was too weak to use my legs. I couldn’t even feel them. Being concerned about that took up too much energy that I didn’t have, too. I knew before I even reached for the bond that I would be too weak to access it, leaving me unable to feel Aria.
