So. The Angel of Death had red hair. How fitting.

“Aria! Snap out of it!”

My vision focused so rapidly, I winced at the amount of light being let in. Was that… Sariel?

I squinted in confusion. “Sariel?” I asked.

And then I took in my surroundings. I was on the floor next to the raised platform; Sariel was hovering over me, his face pinched.

“There you are. Christ, you scared me.”

He rose above me, then reached out a hand. I took it, and the sound in the room exploded into my senses all at once.

He tugged me into a standing position, where I caught a glimpse of the room behind him.

It was utter chaos.

People were screaming and fighting their way toward the exits like their lives depended on it, running from an unknown attacker. Something suddenly skittered across my bare feet, and I jumped, glancing down in time to see a centipede scuttle away. When I took in the floor and the walls properly, my gut heaved.

There were thousands, maybe millions of insects—spiders, centipedes, cockroaches, ants, and scorpions—crawling around and on top of each other to get to the people in their seats. The chairs were covered in them. Judging by some lumps on the ground, they had gotten to some of them. They were everywhere—everywhere except exactly where we stood. That lone centipede had accidentally veered of course, it seemed.

I gagged.

People were fighting them off, some screeching and dropping themselves to the floor. A poor decision, because that was exactly what the bugs needed. I watched in abject horror as one woman was swarmed by centipedes; she screamed and they crawled into her throat, and her shrieks turned to gurgles.

Sariel reeled me into his chest, shoving my head into his neck. “Don’t look,” he breathed. “We need to get out of here.”

“What the hell is going on?” I managed to croak out, pulling my head out of nis neck to look up at him. “They’re not…”

I glanced down to our feet. The creepy crawlies seemed to be taking a wide berth of us. “...They’re not attacking us?”

“That’s because the person controlling them is an ally,” he answered. He took a step in the direction of the horde just as caws sounded out above us.

Crows materialized out of nowhere, hundreds upon hundreds of them, until the entire room was thrust into darkness.

My skin was crawling so badly, I had to tighten my fist to stop myself from scratching it raw.

My vision adjusted quickly, my wolf irritable at being trapped in the dark again after spending days in a cell. “Who the fuck do we know that’s powerful enough to control these many animals?” I hissed out.

Sariel paused to look down at me. His lips kicked up on either side in a way that made me feel hot. This wasnotthe time to be aroused by a goddamn smile.

“I like it when you curse,” he said.

He took another step, and the critters cleaved themselves apart to get out of our way. Heat scorched my cheeks; goosebumps went all over me at the compliment, and I suddenly remembered that I was basically butt-naked.

I scrambled to wrap the arm Sariel wasn’t holding around my breasts. He cocked his head without looking back at me—I knew he was feeling my mortification down the bond.

My wolf was wildly smug. I would smack her if I could, because this was not the time.

I didn’t think I needed to say this to you, but you’re drop-dead gorgeous, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to function like a regular person in polite society after seeing you like this.

My wolf preened. I shuddered as he shared a little of what he was feeling with me.This isn’t the time,I tried to argue, even as I basked in the knowledge that he was attracted to me.

He chuckled, and I felt iteverywhere. On the contrary. I can’t think of a better time to let my mate know she’s hot.

I just nearly died,I reminded him.

I felt tension in his body arise at that.
