We randomly stumbled into a doorway; there were bodies on the floor here, too. I froze as I watched a rat crawl its way out of one’s open mouth.

Don’t remind me. I’ve never been so scared in my life,Sariel said, dragging me through the door.

We came upon a corridor that led in both directions. He took a moment to assess both before taking the left.

How do you know where we’re going?

I don’t. My angel does.

You never answered my question,I reminded him. What ally do we have powerful enough to control that many animals?

“Marilyn,” he said as we passed four huge rats feasting on someone in a corner.

“Who the hell is Marilyn?”

“She’s the Para who broke into Azazel’s mansion and arrested us,” he said by way of explanation.

“And she’s ourally?” I asked, my eyes narrowing suspiciously upon a lumpy, unmoving mass in another corner.

“I think she might be screwing Johnny.”

That halted my steps. “The same Johnny who took me back to Azazel and got us here in the first place? We’re trusting a Para who can control these many animals and your best friend who betrayed you? Isthatwhat I’m gathering?”

“Don’t stop walking,” he urged, tugging me along. “And, yes. We had no other choice. Besides, they’ve delivered so far. We just have to meet at the rendezvous point—”

“I’m not leaving without Neo,” I blurted before I could stop myself.

Sariel whirled on me so quickly, I flinched. “The demon-possessed angel who you told all the intricate details about our bond to?ThatNeo? You’re joking.”

“I’m not, and if you try to make me leave without him, I’ll hate you.”

He jerked back like he’d been slapped.

“Shit… I don’t mean that, sorry,” I conceded. “He’s just traumatized, okay? The Council killed his family and his lover, I think, then he was possessed by a demon for who knows how long, and now he’s all alone, Sariel. I don’t know if he’s even alive.”

“Exactly,” he said. “You don’t know if he’s even alive.”

“If we find him, I want your express agreement that he is coming with us.”

I poked him in the chest, my eyes locked with his. For a second I thought he would argue some more.

“Fine,” he acquiesced. “Now let’s get the fuck out of here. The exit’s that way.”

He jerked his thumb over his shoulder. Sure enough, there were double doors with the word “exit” on them.

“You know how to get to the rendezvous point, right?” I asked as he half-dragged, half-carried me to the door.

“Not quite, but Johnny and I always manage to find each other.” He shrugged. “Sometimes it’s useful.”

I balked when he shoved open the door. We both processed the chaos that was the outdoor space.

Ambulances were parked haphazardly across the parking lot. There were people being tended to by supernaturals in scrubs while a crowd of Paras tried to create some semblance of peace. Prisoners were being transported, and I got a glimpse of some of the most famous criminal supernatural masterminds known to me.

I wondered briefly why they were allowed to live out their lives after committing crimes like mass murder and trafficking, yet I had been sentenced to death by claymore for non-consensually being brought into existence. The “crimes” they’d given me had essentially just been poor behavior, too.

“We need to get you something to wear,” Sariel muttered under his breath, glancing down at my sheer dress.

My arm was still slung across my chest, but my nether regions were bare. This so-called “dress” wasn’t as transparent in the waning light of the late afternoon sun as it had been beneath the artificial lighting inside, at least.
