“That’s awesome. You going to play when you’re a bit bigger?”

He nods eagerly. “Yup. Or maybe hockey like Logan.” Logan is Liam’s oldest kid; he’s twelve and evidently a pretty good hockey player already.

“Or gymnastics like Eden,” I suggest, referencing his ten-year-old sister.

Wyatt’s face screws up. “Eww. Gymnastics is for girls!”

I chuckle. “There are lots of boys who do gymnastics too.”

He considers this thoughtfully for a moment and then nods. I’m expecting him to say something else about potential sporting endeavors, or his siblings. But then he blurts out, “Uncle Finn, do you put dildos in your bottom?”

I let out a choked laugh. “Excuse me?”

“Baxter told me a dildo was a backpack, but Mommy says they’re what grown ups put in their bottoms. Do you put them in your bottom, Uncle Finn?”

I just stare, wide-eyed, as Liam chides, “Wyatt! We talked about boundaries.”

“Sorry, Daddy.”

“I am going to murder Brendan,” Liam grumbles.

My brows shoot up. “Why Brendan? Melinda’s the one who’s been teaching him smut.”

“Yeah, well, Brendan started it.”

I give a wry shake of my head, recalling the tale of Brendan teaching his boyfriend’s kid the strange new synonym for ’backpack.’ He claims it was an accident, but I have no idea how something like that could happen accidentally.

“Daddy, I need to use the potty,” Wyatt announces.

Liam sighs. “Alright, come on.” He offers a quick wave and guides Wyatt away, presumably in search of a bathroom.

I return my attention to the action on the field in front of me and try not to let my mind wander this time. To be fair, I wasn’t watching Shay’s team when I started daydreaming, but this game is just about to wrap up, which means Shay’s team will be in action very soon.

Scanning my gaze around, I notice some familiar figures on the other side of the field. Jamie is easy to spot with his bright red hair, and with him are my little sister Cait, and my brother Connor’s fiancé, Josh. Cait and Josh are each holding a small, bundled-up child, and I can only assume they’re my nephews Dylan and Chase.

Cait spots me from across the field and starts waving and gesturing to come join them. I gesture back that I’ll meet up with them later. And so begins a weird game of long-distance charades. I’m pretty sure she’s trying to tell me everyone’s going to Owen and Blake’s place after the tournament based on the way she’s acting out the syllables “O” and “when?” but it’s hard to tell without being able to confirm it.

“You know, they invented this thing called texting,” I hear a familiar husky voice say. “It lets you easily communicate with people over long distances.”

Fuck, I’m an idiot.

“Maybe I just enjoy charades?” I quip at Ellie, trying not to notice how incredible she looks in thigh-hugging dark jeans and a white puffy jacket.

She rolls her eyes. “Uh huh.”

With a shrug, I slide my phone from my pocket and send a text to Cait.

Me:Are you trying to tell me people are going back to Owen and Blake’s after this?

Cait Kelly:YES! Omg texting is so much easier!

Well, at least I’m not the only one who forgot modern technology exists…

I turn back to Ellie, offering a teasing smirk. “Couldn’t wait to see me, huh?”

She lifts a hand to casually flip some of that gorgeous hair over her shoulder. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve been here for ages. I only came over because someone had to tell you what an idiot you looked like just now.”

I grin even wider. “Oh, so you werewatchingme? Checking me out from afar? You know, usually I’d be weirded out if a girl did that, but in this case I’m flattered.”
