“I still don’t understand what you’re so worked up

about. From what I saw yesterday, he’s pretty interested.”

I flop back onto the couch, letting out a resigned sigh.

“He’s interested in sex, that’s all.”

Xav’s brows creep up. “Are you sure about that?”

I run a hand over my face. “I’m not sure about anything anymore.” I can hear Jack’s voice telling me he wants me. Only me. Always me. And I want to believe him. But then I can see his face when Trent walked in not even five minutes later, and it was like he couldn’t get away from me fast enough. It’s not what it looks like...it’s just sex.The words hurt way more than they should have. It’s not as though I didn’t already know that’s how Jack felt about our relationship, but hearing them spoken aloud, and to Trent of all people. It just sent me straight into self-preservation mode

I catch Xavier’s gaze, trying to explain the situation without giving away Jack’s secret. “It’s more complicated than it seems. It’s...there’s someone else.”

“You mean Trent,” Xav says matter-of-factly, not sounding the least bit bothered by it.

My mouth falls open in surprise and I just stare at him for a moment. “Youknow?”

He sighs. “I’m not an idiot, Al. I saw the look on Jack’s face when he first found out Trent and I were together. It was like he’d just had his heart ripped out of his chest and set on fire right in front of him.”

“Does Trent know?” I ask, completely stunned.

Xav shakes his head. “No. I think the mere idea is so foreign to him it’d never even crossed his mind. He’s under the impression Jack was upset because he thought Trent has been lying about his orientation all those years. And I’m sure that was part of it,” Xav allows. “I did consider mentioning it to him, but...”

“But,” I press, brows raised.

He sighs. “Trent’s way too empathetic to carry some- thing like that. It’d crush him to know he’d been the cause of Jack’s pain for so long, even if it was completely unintentional.”

I let out a harsh scoff. “Or maybe you’re worried he’d leave you for Jack. He seemed jealous as fuck yesterday.”

Xav’s eyes widen in shock, then he surprises me by bursting into a fit of wild laughter. “Are you insane?”

“Did you not see him flat out glaring at me?”

“Yeah, because you hurt Jack.”

“What? How did I do that?”

Xav rolls his eyes. “When you all but pronounced your

hatred of him. He looked like a wounded puppy.”

I sit up straight.Wounded puppy? That’s the look he gets whenever Xavier and Trent do something mushy or talk about how much they love each other. I shake my head adamantly. “No. That must have been about you and

Trent.”

“I’m telling you it was about you,” Xav insists. “You

didn’t see it because you wouldn’t look at him. I swear, he looked like he was about to cry.”

I bury my head in my hands, my fingers digging through my hair. The thought of Jack in pain is gut- wrenching. The thought that I might have caused it? Unbearable.

“What am I supposed to do?”

Xav sighs. “Well, you could start bytalkingto him.”

I glance up at my best friend, feeling even more

pathetic than earlier. “And what if you’re wrong about him? What if he’s really not interested?”
