Since he had clothes and boots on already, he shot her one last look and strode out of the apartment. The drive to Blackout headquarters took longer than usual due to morning traffic. He took all the back streets and alleys he could to reach the building faster.

All the while, his mind worked over what Sparrow would have to say to him. He’d overstepped his rank, taken matters into his own hands—again. They could really kick him off the team now. Insubordination was no small thing.

Maybe hewasn’ttruly cut out for Blackout.

When he entered headquarters, Sparrow stepped into the hall. His glare fell on Apollo, then he twitched two fingers for him to follow.

As he passed the tech room, he caught Gunnison staring at him. Apollo gave him a nod, and Gunnison returned it.

On some level Gunny probably felt responsible for Apollo getting called in for an ass chewing since he spent a lot of his time trawling for red flags. He probably found that video leak first.

Entering the office, Sparrow barked, “Shut the door.”

He did as ordered and braced himself in front of the desk.

“Don’t bother acting like you follow orders, Apollo. When have you ever? I could toss your ass off this team for what you did.”

He stared at his commanding officer, waiting for more.

“But I won’t. We need men like you, someone who will take action.”

Some of the blaze in Apollo’s chest he’d carried on the trip here died down.

Sparrow cut a hand through the air. “Care to fill me in on your reason for sending that video we’ve spent a lot of manpower trying to keepoutof the hands of the press?”

“It’s simple. Amaya will take Raheem’s challenge. If they don’t kill each other first—and a hell of a lot of the members of their own cell too—they’ll create enough of a stir that we’ll find them and do it ourselves.”

Sparrow eyed him for an endless moment. “Fuck, I’d like to kick your ass. But your idea’s too damn brilliant.”

He controlled his reaction and didn’t smile at the praise. “Am I still cleared to join you if we’re called to fight?”

“You are.”

Apollo knew it was coming, but it still felt damn good to hear it. He took a step toward Sparrow, hand extended. Sparrow gripped it hard and then released it just as fast.

“Let’s discuss the plan before we bring the rest in.”

“Gunny already knows, I’m guessing.”

“He intercepted the video.” He opened his mouth to continue, but Apollo’s phone buzzed. He gave Apollo a nod. “Take the call.”

Apollo brought his device up and scanned the caller ID. “It’s my contact. He’s another ghost like me. I’ve been working with him to get what I need over the past couple weeks.” He brought it to his ear. “Apollo here.”

“We’ve got trouble. Something happened when you sent that video.”

His heart sank to the pit of his hollow stomach. “What happened?”

“You made a mistake. The terrorists tracked the transmission. They know where the video originally was sent from.”

“Indika’s place,” he breathed. His heart stopped beating and he felt his head swim like he still suffered from that concussion.

Sparrow jerked his head up. Their stares met.

“I have to get to her! Meet me there, Oz.”

“I’m already on my way.”

He turned for the door, already striding fast toward the exit. Sparrow stomped after him. “What the fuck’s going on, Apollo?”
