“They know. The terrorists know I sent that video from Indika’s apartment! I have to reach her.”

“We’re right behind you. Go!” Sparrow clapped him on the shoulder, and Apollo took off at a dead run for his car. Phone in hand, he dialed Indika.

She didn’t answer, and he tried again. By the time he jumped into his car and gunned it, he’d tried calling her three more times.

“Pick up!” He slammed the heel of his hand against the wheel. “Pick up, goddammit!”

Fear gnawed his insides. Adrenaline rushed through his veins, sending his vital signs through the roof. His temples throbbed and his stomach dropped out.

He didn’t give a damn about facing his own death—a real death this time. He’d faced the worst and come out the other side.

But hecouldn’tface losing Indika.

SIXTEEN

Indika worked her way through the apartment, tidying up. She carried empty teacups into the kitchen and wiped down the countertops. These small actions weren’t nearly enough to keep her mind distracted from her worries, though.

That video was out there in the world. She had no doubt it was wreaking the havoc AJ intended it to.

His idea was brilliant. It would drag the terrorists out of hiding and put them in plain sight with targets on their backs. And the men jockeying for leadership could fight each other for supremacy.

Even if one died by the other’s hand, it left only one for Blackout to finish off.

She let the water swirl down the kitchen drain. It gurgled. But a deep, low rumble sounded too.

Or had she felt it? The floor felt like it was vibrating under her feet.

She looked down at them but couldn’t detect anything moving. Suddenly, the building swayed.

She toppled sideways, catching herself against the counter. She cried out when it hit near her injury, but other people were screaming from beyond the walls of her apartment.

Pushing forward, she propelled herself to the window and looked down on the street below. People were running from the building.

Had there been an earthquake? They were rare in this part of the country.

The floor rocked again, and her heart dropped.

An explosion!

A deafening, cracking noise ripped through the air. Something huge and metal flew past her window. In shock, she watched it rocket to the sidewalk.

She let out a scream as she realized what it was.

A wrought iron balcony.

Another and another fell like heavy, killer raindrops on the concrete. She shrieked in terror at what she was seeing. She had to get out of here—now.

Thank god she didn’t have any pets or children to save. She only had herself.

Where was AJ? Oh god, was he okay?

The timing was terrifying, but not even a renowned and powerful terrorist group could stage an attack of this size in such a short time. That video just hit the TV stations.

They had all the materials and personnel ready to go. They could easily change the target to her building. Or was the whole world being blown up?

AJ would be at Blackout headquarters by now. Wouldn’t he? Her shocked brain couldn’t connect the time he’d left to the route he might have taken. Adding in rush-hour traffic and all those city buses to get stuck behind—

Another crack deafened her. Dust from broken ceiling plaster and the crumbling walls around her clogged the air. The floor wasn’t flat anymore. She couldn’t walk in a straight line and stumbled toward the door she couldn’t make out through the haze. She slapped at her pockets, trying to locate her phone.
