“I never imagined I would develop feelings for him,” I say as I hold onto her. “I never would have agreed to the fake relationship if I did. My mom’s right. Fake relationships only lead to disappointment and heartache.”

Ava and Chloe wrap their arms around me, too. We would stay like this for hours, but first period bell rings.

“So what are you going to do?” Chloe asks as we make our way to Ally’s class. “Will you tell him how you feel?”

“No way. I’ll hold out until the coding competition. If Vanessa doesn’t try to get back together with Colt by then, he’ll try to get back together with her.”

“And if he doesn’t?” Lily asks with large, hopeful eyes. “Or what if Vanessa doesn’t want to get back together with him?”

I shake my head at her. “I’m not going to tell him how I feel, Lily. Because he doesn’t feel the same way. And I’d rather not make a fool of myself.” She’s about to say something, but I say, “Please forget about it.”

She frowns. “Fine.”

We’re about to enter the classroom when someone calls, “Willow Park?”

I turn around and find Mr. Bryant heading toward me.

“We’ll see you in class,” Ava says before she and the others enter.

“I hoped to catch you before class,” he says as he catches up to me. “I just want to check in to see how your app is doing. I heard about the…complication.”

“It’s doing okay. I made some changes…”

After I’m done telling him about it, he nods. “I’m impressed. That’s actually a pretty good idea.”

“Thanks. Colton helped me brainstorm.”

“That’s great. It’s a good thing it’s not a complete overhaul of the app because I’m not sure you would be able to send it in on time. But with the small changes, I think we’ll be okay. Send it to me tonight so I can look over it, okay?”

“Will do.”

“Hang in there,” he tells me. “It’s not over yet.”

I just hope he’s right.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Colton

I spend most of Sunday morning defending Willow from the jerks harassing her online, like I’ve been doing all weekend. The kids have pretty much left her alone at school, except for the whispers and the laughing, but it’s different online. They’re still trying to tear her down.

But I don’t let them. I’ve been telling them she’s the most incredible girl I’ve ever met in my life. That she’s wonderful, spectacular, beautiful, all the positive adjectives I can think of.

It may be a bit much, but I won’t let anyone go through what I went through as long as I can help it.

It seems to make them back off, but some still continue tearing her and her app down.

The app.

The one that matched us together, even though we’re pretending it didn’t.

Shaking that away, I continue sticking up for the girl who has come to mean so much to me. The girl who’s changed my life. Maybe that’s a bit extreme, but shedidencourage me to rebuild a relationship with my father.

He’s at work because he has things to take care of. He told me he’ll be back in a few hours and we’ll go out to eat. A few months ago, he’d stay at work for practically the entire day. I’m glad we’re in a good place now.

The doorbell rings.

Is it Willow?
