“What do we do?” I ask.

He rubs the back of his neck. “Wait for it to blow over?”

Releasing a heavy sigh, I plop down in one of the desks. He lowers himself across from me, drumming his fingers on the table.

We’re quiet. The only sounds are from the kids outside who haven’t gone to lunch.

“Sorry for putting you through this,” he says after a little while. “I never imagined something like this would happen.”

I lean back in my seat. “You’re the king of school. So when you put your arm around a girl, people talk.”

He runs his hand down his face and mutters under his breath.

“I got more downloads on my app,” I tell him. “I think it’s because they think we’re together.”

He chuckles lightly. “I’m glad some good came out of this mess. My only positive is that Vanessa looks jealous.”

I laugh lightly, too. “Imagine if we were dating for real. I bet the entire school would download my app.”

“And maybe Vanessa would want to get back together with me.”

“Too bad we’re not,” I say.

“Yeah. Too bad.”

The room is bathed in silence.

My eyes slowly lift to his, and I find his pasted on mine.

He bends close. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“I don’t know. What are you thinking?”

“What areyouthinking?”

I stand and start pacing the room. “You’re the king of school. If you were my boyfriend, people would see that Idoknow what I’m talking about when it comes to dating. I mean, I, the invisible tech geek, snagged the most popular guy at Edenbury High. That practically makes me an expert. And you.” I turn around and point at him. “Your ex-girlfriend would be super appalled that you chose someone likeme.”

He gets to his feet and runs his hand through his hair. “So you’re suggesting that…”

“We pretend to date,” we both say.

“You’d get your girl back and I’d get my downloads,” I add. “We both win.”

He’s quiet for a few seconds. “You think we can pull it off?”

“I don’t know.” I glance at the door. “All those kids out there think we’re dating. We’re all over social media. I think…yeah, I think wecanpull it off.”

He stares at the door for a short while, deep in contemplation. Then he turns to me. “If we do decide to fake date, how long would we keep up the charade?”

I scratch my head as I think. “If we break up before the coding competition, I’ll lose all credibility. But what if Vanessa wants to get back together with you before then? I don’t want you to lose your shot with her.”

He drops down in his desk. “The competition is three weeks away. We’d have to hold out until then.” He sighs. “It’s so hard to see her throw guys in my face,” he says in a low, pained voice.

“I’m sure she’s only doing that because she’s hurt.”

“That’s what I keep telling myself.”

We’re both quiet.
