Beefstew547: Colt with THAT? Has he lost his mind?

Rosepearl4: I’ve been trying to get him to notice me for months. How the heck did she claim him?

Sis4ever: Maybe after Vanessa, he wants to try something new? I guess she’s pretty. Not in the same league as the popular girls, though. But she’s decent.

Kool4skool: Must be momentary insanity. We’ll get our Colt back soon. And she’ll go back to…wherever the heck she came from

Dudewhat?6: Wait, who the heck is she? She goes to our school?

I raise my eyes to my friends. “They think Colton and I are together? Ha.”

Normally, a guy putting his hand around a girl isn’t a cause for gossip, but the way Colton is looking at me? I could see why people might form the wrong conclusions.

“I don’t think it’s funny, Willow,” Ava says. “They’re saying all these things about you. Some of the comments aren’t very nice.”

“Whatever. Once they realize we’re not together, they’ll forget all about me. And I’ll go back to being invisible.” I sigh heavily. “If only my app wouldn’t be invisible…”

“So you and Colton…I mean, there’s nothing going on between you guys?” Lily asks.

I give her a look. “You, too, Lily?”

“It was so sweet how he stuck up for you yesterday. Maybe that made you feel something.”

“It was cool of him,” I agree. “But there’s definitely nothing going on. You guys know I don’t want a boyfriend in high school.”

“But you also said that if the right person comes along, you won’t say no,” Chloe reminds me.

“I did say that. But Colton? Never in a million years. It just shows how ridiculous high school gossip is. They know where he stands and they know where I do. And they think we’re together? Gosh, I think the kids at school need to find hobbies. You know, get off social media and live real life?”

Lily is about to say something, but the bell rings. As my friends and I make our way toward Ally’s class, I feel eyes on me. Lots of eyes. When I lift my gaze, I find nearly every single person in the hallway staring at me. Some point and whisper to their friends. Sheesh, they really do need to find hobbies.

Throughout the day, I get stares and pointing fingers and whispers. I even get scoffs and snorts. When I’m in the bathroom before lunch, I hear a group of girls dissecting me and trying to figure out what part of me attracts Colton. Not my brain, of course, because Colton doesn’t care about that stuff (they are so wrong). So what can it be? Maybe he wants to taste another flavor? (Ugh, who even talks like that? What flavor would I be, anyway?). They conclude that it’s just a phase and Colton will throw me to the curb in a few days.

I’m not interested in confronting them, so I hide in my stall as I wait for them to leave. Digging my phone out of my pocket, I check my app.

Holy heck. Thirty-five new downloads? It’s not because….

Can it be the rumors? Are kids downloading my app because they think Mr. Popular and I are dating?

The girls finally leave the bathroom, still gossiping about me. I wait a minute before slipping out of my stall and out the front door.

There’s a crowd of girls down the hallway. As I approach, I realize Colton’s in the center. He’s holding his hands up like shields, as though he’s worried the girls will pounce on him.

One girl notices me and points. “There she is!”

“How could you choose her over me?” a girl demands to Colton.

Ignoring everyone, I push through the throng of girls until I reach him. There’s a freakin’ blockade surrounding him. I reach inside until I find his arm and yank him out. Everyone murmurs and gasps as I drag him to an empty classroom and shut the door behind me.

He and I stand there facing each other, trying to drown out the sounds from the mob outside.

“Colton, we have a serious problem.”

“I know.”

“The entire school thinks we’re dating.”

“I know.”
